That is insane. Of course, Shalane isn’t training for 3k and isn’t in peak shape, but it’s still astounding that there’s only a 10-second difference at this point in time.

Shalane Flanagan is also 21 years older than Katelyn Tuohy.

That’s nearly as shocking as the initial post. Wow.
Also, the last time Flanagan competed indoors, and the last time she ran a 3k, was 2011. I am impressed with 15 1/2 year-old Tuohy's 9:05, but I am just as impressed with 36 1/2 year-old Flanagan's 8:55, especially considering her focus on the marathon in recent years.

Plus Shalane ran sub 15 for the 5k this past summer at 36.

What does that indicate for Tuohy’s upcoming 5k record assault?
All you Tuohy doubters: Katelyn is a few seconds off the second-place finisher at NCAAs, who has good shot to win NCAA 3K indoors. Think about that for a few.
Tuohy is about to dismantle the high school record books.

Absolutely nothing, to be honest. One is a former world class track runner dropping down from the marathon for a break in training; one is a high school girl at peak fitness in an event for which she trains. Tuohy won’t get anywhere near 15 min, which is what I assume your post meant to imply as a possibility. She could run 15:30-40 at her best, which is in itself an unbelievable performance from a high school sophomore.
The real question should be will Tuohy be better than Flanagan ever has been?

If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world

if you think Tuohy wouldn't have run faster than 9:05 in this race you definitely donated way too much blood recently. there is a real possibility that Tuohy would have beaten Flanagan.
yeah and katelyn did it all by herself
Didn't Purrier run 8:56 at BU a month ago?

Wow, thanks for pointing that out. Had you not done so, I would have thought they were really close in age (insert major sarcasm).

When was the last time you donated blood? I don't really think it makes sense to compare; but even though Flanagan is a marathoner primarily now, do you really think she couldn't kick hard enough to drop Tuohy?

I remember a young lady, Mary Cane, similar things were wondered about here (and she was faster yet I believe). Just a couple years down the road, you think she will be better than Flanagan?
Obvious answer is that Tuohy will not be better than Flanagan. She has a hell of a lot of things to accomplish before she gets there. It's an insult to even compare in this manner.

Yeah she soloed a 8:55 at the beginning of December.
Ten seconds is better than a full second per 400 meters. It's plenty.

Lol that’s what they said about that Ping girl. It’s been so long since I’ve seen her name on milesplit or these boards I forget her name;) #burnout
