It's not just that he broke the WR in 1995 by 11 seconds, but he did it solo and LOOK at his face at 10 laps... not even straining.

He was a complete natural.
GOAT.
Likeable - yes. Clean - no.
Amazing how some athletes get the benefit of doubt on these message boards, and other - not so much.

So. Damn. True.
He was clean, that is just what happens when you run 20 kilometres a day growing up and eat a plant based diet.
That was a weak record. We have non-Africans running 12:55 these days. Come on now.
Africans haven been doped up for decades.
The Nike Oregon Project alone was TESTED for PEDs more than the entire country of Kenya and Ethiopia combined last year.

There are so many things stupid and ignorant about your post, but to start with - lots of people (especially east Africans) run 20km per day, lots of people (including east Africans) eat plant based diets, and lots of people (especially east Africans) do all the other things you're surely to mention (live at altitude, run barefoot, are socioeconomically incentivised, etc.) Why aren't they all running sub 12:40, and around 26:20.

Exactly.
Incredible to see how easy it looked. Absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing this video. It's as if he has more red cells or something...and yes it's interesting that he gets a pass along with certain others that have delivered unreal performances.

yep.
riveting and impressive.
I had not seen this before.
If Mr. Gebrselassie had run a marathon in 1995 I wonder how fast his world record would be. It would probably still be the current world record.
At 5' 3" he must have been one of the lightest distance runners ever. It might have been natural. His heart didn't have to work as hard as others because his weight was less than anybody on the track.
He doesn't look at all like he's on drugs. Despite what LR says, people on drugs don't run fast. My sister was on drugs, and they just made her dead, not fast.

He didn't fail a drug test. Everyone should get the benefit of the doubt unless they fail a test.
I know dirty athletes get away with it but it does no good to accuse everyone who is fast.
It's not solving the problem.
That may be but the running commentator mentioned that under 13:00 was considered amazing and in 1995 under 13:00 is commonplace. It seems pretty obvious that the reason for it being commonplace was the artificial enhancements from pharmaceuticals.
I don't know, dude. All top runners seem like they are cybernetic to me when I contemplate their performances in relation to my own ability. Consider what Ramanujan did all by himself with a crappy chalkboard while living in squalor. Maybe that guy was on drugs to accomplish what he did or maybe he was just really freaking smart.

Likeable? I guess. He can speak English so maybe that makes him popular.
Some athletes, such as Bekele, get no doubt for obvious reasons. They are simply head and shoulders above the other scrubs.
__
Was Komen in that race? I swear I saw him in one of the early frames. What the he?? was he doing before running 12:39 / 7:20 ?

To think that in one year Komen was also at this pace is just as ridiculous.
Listen to what Ovett says @ around the 5:50 mark, something like he never thought that he would see a time like that in his lifetime. Interestingly, we might not see a time like that "again" in our lifetime's.
He wasn't even exhausted.

A wolf could beat him.
