Well, I have a problem. I'm totally completely obsessed with running (it's my favorite thing EVER) and I can't do it. What's more, I haven't run pain free since early 2016 (do the math, in a month it'll have been 2 years since "the incident", more on that later...)
A brief backstory on me: I have been running since age 10, usually just 3.5 miles a few times a week. At age 11 increased to 7 miles as my "long run." Was running strong up until age 13 -14, became faster than ever. had a few injuries but always recovered VERY quickly - nothing major. Didn't have high mileage, only about 30 MPW, lots of cross training.
After some time off running, I decided to get back to running in 2016. I hopped on the treadmill at a fast incline and pace, and ran 3 miles. The entire time, my shoe was too loose on my left foot, and so I was kind of straining my foot to keep it on (I know, I should have just stopped and retied it...). Long story short, had slight ankle pain when I hopped off the treadmill. About an hour later, the pain was a bit more significant - I was kind of limping, but no swelling or bruising of the left (painful) ankle.
I could barely walk without pain for 4 months. I went to 3 specialists and had x-rays and thorough examinations throughout that time frame - no abnormalities at all, not even swelling. Running is downright painful, as I feel like my left ankle is out of control and flopping around and will twist at any moment. Sometimes the pain is concentrated in my peroneal tendon, but honestly its just all over the foot, not really localized. My right foot is FINE though!
Well, I recently went to a physical therapist who specializes in running (he's an elite marathoner) and was diagnosed with anterior ankle impingement. My feet are narrow and flexible, and the left foot only overpronates tremendously. He made custom orthotics and told me to slowly build back up in terms of mileage, and ice the foot to reduce inflammation from cumulative stress of overpronation. Thoroughly examined my feet, no abnormalities.
I've been wearing the orthotics like 15 hours a day, but its been 2 weeks and running hurts after only 1/4 mile!
So, anyone have any advice for me? I've tried just about every ankle exercise you can imagine and have maintained a consistent routine, but to no avail...
Also my overpronation is, apparently, seriously severe...
Any insight would be so appreciated!! Should I stick w the orthotics?
