Time goals are time goals, a measure of improvement, fitness, talent, etc..

Of course that is a good thing.

The question is, shooting for records all the time, if they happen great, nice to be that good, but if they are the focus, not so great.

I agree that shooting for records is fine if you don’t have much competition and it’s achievable.

If she failed miserably at the attempt, probably a better idea to go with achievable time goals instead as the competition just isn’t available in most of her races.

Hard to figure out your ability if you just go for the win with a slower time... though her coach probably has a good idea from her workouts.

There's not much else you could put in front of her for goal setting.

There isn't another high school girl in the country that can run with her, so that won't work.

She's going to win every race she's in, so "winning" isn't going to make her get any better.

Outside of having her compete with boys, shooting for records is probably the only thing you could give her as something to "chase".

I will yawn if she only sets the 5000 meter indoor record. That would be unimpressive to me for an athlete at her level. No, she would need to set the outdoor 5000 meter record to wow me.
