Agree that nerves are good. I try to distract myself, but it doesn't work. I tend to do two things anyway: first, I do some visualization. It tends to give me a sense of control over something that is seemingly out of control. Second, I remind myself that the outcome of the race is determined by my fitness, and that fitness has been established well before race day. It's going to hurt, but the outcome has, by and large, been determined. It's just about suffering through the pain for the pre-determined positive outcome. It's usually true, and even when it hasn't been, it's usually close enough for me to be able to trick myself with the same approach next race.
It was gross. I was all jowls and gut, but my arms and legs were still skinny. I realized I needed to lose weight for real when I went snowboarding and had trouble reaching my bindings after getting off of the lift.
OR - I need to post a big pic from about 3 years ago. Smoove can atest that I was a big ole boy.
Post away—let us see the tubby RRR.
These weight loss stories are a bit different from mine. I do have to admit that I have always been skinny, but starting from about my mid thirties my weight began to creep up. Prior to 2014 I spent all my waking hours sitting on my ass. Late summer 2014 I started commuting to work by bike a few days a week (~25mi round trip) until winter weather curtailed my bike commutes. When I started bike commuting my calorie intake went up while my weight began to slowly go down. I made the mistake of not reducing my calorie intake and I ended up with a weight that was higher than when I started exercising. Lesson learned, eat less when not as active. At some point a started running more regularly and the weight started to drop again and then stabilized. So for me I lost weight while eating more but I have been burning a lot more calories by being much more active. The story doesn't end there. This past fall I changed my diet to help with some intestinal problem I was having. Since then I have for the most part been on a low FODMAP diet. At around the same time I changed my diet I had a stressful event and between the two I dropped about 5lbs. in a week's time. I'm 5'8" and went from 150+ to ~130. I have a light frame and could probably lose another couple pounds in fat, but I consider myself to be at 'competition' weight now.
One of the frustrating things about all of the "How much should I weigh?" threads can be demonstrated by this thread.
Still Improving weighs seventeen pounds less than me (I'm up to about 147) at the same height, but feels like he could go down even lower. I raced all of my marathons at between 142 and 145 pounds, and ran my college PRs at 140. I have fairly low body fat, but I am skinny and don't carry much muscle. Most of my weight comes from having a wider frame then you would expect for a skinny runner. So if you look at me, I would look lean and skinny (probably to a fault), but my number on the scale would be higher and fortunately the most people on the thread. So 128 might be perfect for one 5' 8" guy while 140 or 145 might be right for another.
Very true. People think i weigh 165 because i have wide shoulders and carry all my weight from waist up. My legs are painfully thin!
I am glad I am not racing this weekend. Up all night gambling and drinking and carousing. Not as young as i once was.
As far as weight being complicated, I am 202 pounds at about 7 percent body fat shooting for a sub 2:40.
I love running so much, but was not gifted with the correct genetics. Still love the process and studying training, though.

100% agree. I'm 6' (183cm) but about the same weight as Smoove. I ran all my PRs at ~142lb eating whatever I felt like. I used to train with a 16 flat guy who was of pacific island descent and maybe 5'9" 165. He never touched a weight but was just jacked. His thighs were probably twice the size of mine.

The whole weight for a given height thing does not really account for muscle mass. In my case, I am thin without a lot a muscle. To be honest I can see that I no longer have the muscle mass of my youth and it is a bit depressing. I was ~125lbs when I graduated from HS. I weigh 5lbs more now, but probably have 10lbs more fat on me now with probably 5lbs less muscle. On the other hand some of the weight could be in part that I keep myself better hydrated these days.
Yeah. I have a few lbs right around my lower abs that are stubborn. I guess I could lose them pretty easy if I laid off the beer..
I'm almost 6' and my best races were always around 152. I lifted weights a good deal so maybe had a little to much muscle back then. At that time my body fat percentage was under 5 so there really wasn't much fat. The most I've been up to is 215 which was becoming uncomfortable. I'm still hoping to get down to 170 and then see what happens.
Good luck racing today

I don't think hydration should make a huge difference. When you hydrate better your body actually stores less water from what I read, cause it's expecting water to keep coming, whereas if you're not drinking enough water it'll retain water in places like your cheeks.
Obs: I read this in random websites so idk how true it is.
Strange coincidence. My wife told me last night that I need to eat more because I am looking too thin. So I guess the official verdict is in, I'm too thin ;-) My response was that I am fine for now. I'll probably start adding back some weight after my goal race in the spring.
I didn't race today. I decided not to and my uncle got hurt this week so I have a half marathon bob to use if I want to run and drop out before funnel if I want. Not feeling great but I could go after a decent ten mile time and drop.
RRR - Do what you can, brother. What’s up with the Houston Web site? I punched in names and bib numbers, and kept getting “not found.” Of course the are no results right now (for the half and full), but people’s names and details should be in the system.
Had no time for running yesterday, and so I had to do a biggie today. Glad I was able to pull it off. Went 20.13 hilly, cold, windy miles in 2:15:52, which is 6:45 overall pace.
Best of to success to our racers.
I think you said you use your phone or an iPad, right? The app they produced is pretty good and I was able to find everyone on there.
Got it...yes, I use an iPad. I will go ahead and get the app. Have a great race. You feeling good today?
Yeah, I feel pretty good. Nice run over the last couple of miles of the course with RRR and AngryJohnny this morning. Cool temps will make it about perfect for racing.
