Why doesn't he just keep training while he's in dental school?

He doesn't want to. Try reading the article.
He obviously doesn’t know what it takes to succeed at the world class level either because after 2 years of pro running he’s already quitting! Good thing brooks invested money in him. No wonder they don’t think pro running is a sport.
Now he can join the rest of us in the real world where his 1:45 doesn’t mean anything. Where all of us posters already make $200k, drive Ferrari’s, have wife’s who are tens, children attending Harvard and millions in retirement savings! Now he’s more of a nobody than he already was. Utter waste of talent.
There are some things that are more important than running to many people. For example, having a stable career and raising a family. If that works for them, great. I'm sure they could care less what message board posters think about the decision.
I would not want to run for Brooks. Nike would have the means to change his mind.
Just to be clear, I am not aware of some list of careers that the church encourages its members to go into. Im just speaking as a member myself, we are counseled to serve others and prayerfully make decisions like marriage and career choices, wherever that brings us. Maybe in certain areas like Utah, the culture leads people to those careers. Who knows. Also drinking coffee is one piece of counsel in a larger health code called the word of wisdom, and we do believe that disobedience to this by smoking, drinking beer, coffee, or whatever is listed in the health code is sinful because it is disobedience to Gods counsel. We believe in keeping those commandments to detail because it is a fundamental belief to us that God gives us commandments for our benefit to learn and grow, and that we can repent because of Christ when we mess up (as everyone, mormon or not, will at some point).
Also, while we dont believe in a heaven and hell the same as the rest of Christianity, I'm not aware of seven levels of heaven. Also, the belief is not so simply that we earn our way into heaven. We believe that there is no way we could just earn our way into heaven, Jesus Christ is our only hope to live with God. Our faithfulness permits us to live with God. Ultimately what allows us to enter rest in heaven with our loved ones and God is Christ's perfect life, suffering, and atonement for everyone who has ever lived which allows everyone to grow and be the best they can be. also, visit mormon.org or read the bible and book of mormon for more insight! That wpuld be much better than my post or any other post on letsrun
Anyways just wanted to give some insight, maybe it even helps in undwrstanding Shaq's decisions. I was actually kind of diaappointed to see him retire, would have been cool to see more...
Interested and accepted are two very different things. Does he have an undergrad degree?

Grow up. Running doesn't pay. It's an absolute joke. This kid is doing the most sensible thing.
Why do I need to grow up? We aren't discussing me. Maybe I'm 10 years old? Should I grow up?
No one runs for the money. Running isn't about making sensible financial decisions. If that were true, there would be next to zero professional US runners and our Olympic teams would still be abysmal. Is that what you want?
The fake Shaq sounds like a quitter. He's some kid blessed with gobs of talent, enough so that he can go get fat on a Mormon mission and run some ridiculous 800m time with very little work when he returns. Eventually he hit a wall where his talent couldn't carry him any further so he quits to chase the illustrious career of a DENTIST. Again, good riddance.
You aren't ten. It would explain the inflexibility of your thought processes but I'm afraid that the much likelier explanation is shortsightedness and raw stupidity. With each post you make, you demonstrate to everyone here just how immature your thinking is on this matter.
Youth is wasted on the young. If it was me, I'd look back in ten years and just wonder what could have been. I am not judging the young man. We've all been young and taken opportunities for granted.
Get off your high horse.

Guys, just substitute "dentist" with "support a family".
My take is that he wants to raise a stable family, and values that more than an Olympic medal. Being a dentist means he can have a stable income. Being a runner does not (especially with performance-based contracts).
There's this weird Mormon family dynamic I don't understand, but I think that's what he's saying.
Can you explain the “weird” dynamic? What is weird?
Good for him! Looks like he thought about who he wants to be and is choosing the path that brings him there. I'd have loved to watch him run and continue to succeed, but it's his life, not mine!
Smart Kid.
Good luck to him in his dentistry.
He can do way more good for himself and his family by moving on. He can always put his flats on and go for a run.
Let me do this math for you.
37 years @ 200k per year = 7.4 million. What's the difference?[/quote]
My point was if he had been ACCEPTED into dental school he should go. Dental school is difficult to get into and they don't exactly hold spots open for you to get into it any time you feel like it. I was assuming he already had a good DAT score, good grades and had already been accepted into a program if he was going to forego his running career (or maybe his familial obligations exceed his current income as a professional runner and he NEEDS to do something different). In reality he has broken 1:45 one time in his career and took a step back in his first year as a pro (it's not always easy to adapt to life as a professional athlete versus running in college where everything is laid out for you and the supporting staff and facilities are there for you). While his coach may claim he could break the American Record, he is quite a ways away from that mark (sounds more like coach speak to me). After reading the article closer, it does sound like he might be under estimating how difficult it is to get into dental school (and how during dental school he is going to have to spend more time and energy away from his family than he would as a professional runner). In either scenario it does not sound like his heart is not in running.
Shaq got married before he left BYU.
He left because he thought he could get more money on a contract in an Olympic year than in 2017.
The quote of the day today is fantastic, Shaquille is a very thoughtful and mature person. He is going to do very well in life at the things HE wants to excel in. Going forward that will not be professional running and that is just fine.

Always amazes me at how butthurt some people get over others who don't care about running as much as they do, to the point where they seem to take it personally.
News flash: Not everyone cares as much as you do about running around in circles. To "Grow Up" in part means accepting that others may have different priorities in life and refraining from casting aspersions at their character because of it.
Sheesh.

Money? He'll make 100x in his first year over any little stipend to break the AR.
Hahaha! Hardly...do you have any idea how much money a general dentist makes their first year out of school? Any idea how much the average dentist owes from dental school? I hope I'm proved wrong, but would bet that he would not make entrance into dental school anyway, so it's all a moot point. Really poor decision to have left school prior to graduation.
College buddy of mine has now been practicing for 20+ years. Drives a Maserati. The Zestimate on his 6,000 sq. ft. home in one of the most affluent communities in Westchester County (NY) is $4.5M. Can you now fathom why Walker would want to be a dentist?
I'm sure 'greed' is not one of God's commandments - so can't be the sole reason he is quitting running i.e just because he can earn a truck load of money. If God gave him these talents, surely he should be respecting that and represent his God by utilising those talents to their fullest. Maybe, he is just lazy and doesn't want to put in the work required to be the best...it's not easy to train day in day out, sacrificing everything, just so you can run 1 or 2 seconds faster. Good luck to him

This.
Some of you sound like you almost take it personally that someone chose not to pursue professional running. Why?
