In the past 10 years, four guys have broken 15:00 at Foot Lockers. In 1985, nine guys did it in the same race, with 20 guys in total under 15:20 (the winning time this year was 15:19).
In fact, from 1980 to 1989, seven of the eight races in San Diego (88%) saw a sub-15 winning time. From 1990 to 1999, it was just two of seven (29%), from 2000 to 2009, it was three of eight (38%) and from 2010 to 2017, it was four of eight (50%).
Here's the all-time list of fastest times at FL Finals at Balboa Park:
14:36.8 Reuben Reina 1985
14:38.1 Marc Davis 1986
14:40.2 Chris Solinsky 2002
14:41.3 Mark Mastalir 1985
14:41.7 Adam Goucher 1993
14:49.8 Todd Williams 1986
14:50.0 Scott Fry 1984
14:50.9 Mark Dani 1985
14:50 Mike Fout 2007
14:51.4 Jonathan Hume 1985
It's similar on the girls' side. From 1983 to 1986, the winning time was under 17:00 every year, and under 16:50 in three of the four years. Since 1986, only three girls have broken 17:00 at Balboa Park -- Melody Fairchild (16:39 in 1990), Julia Stamps (16:41 in 1994), and Aisling Cuffe (16:53 in 2010).
Does anyone know if they ran the same course in the 1980s? Otherwise, can someone explain why the times were so fast back then -- particularly 1985?
Update: I forgot to include Mike Fout in my original post
