at the end of the day he was a pro runner not that long ago. Thought for sure he would have been sub3 when he started out. Wonder what his 5k time is now?

Yet one more raeson I'm grateful you note being a coach in your handle.without people like you, I would never have guessed that marathon times run in the setting of 75+ degrees and 80% humidity year after year would be slow! Woooooooo
Anser me this one Coachy-- When I have the wind in my face, will I wind up with a slower time or can I compensate with better form and trying harder??
Wtf is this?
Nick Symonds has been irrelevant the past 5 years. We need to stop paying attention to a so called "professional runner" who cant even break 3 hours in the marathon. SAD!

I thought his 3:30 was underselling his abilities, despite the low mileage. A lot of years doing 10+ mile runs- plus being sub-4:00.
Yeah, the buildup was far from ideal, but we're not talking about a new runner with no aerobic base. He has a strong aerobic engine and good strength. I've been saying since he announced he was going to run, if he can get a 50-60 mpw build up for 6-8 weeks, he can go sub 2:40. Say a few years from now, if he really wants to get wild with it, he could go sub sub 2:30. We're talking an elite runner here ppl lol..awesome first showing..much respect
I dont have any respect for a world class athlete who is just dicking around and everyone should be ashamed about making a big deal about a 3 hr marathon. Nick Symmonds was once a great athlete. Now he is just a joke and a publicity stunt.

He could have done this with NO training. Man can run sub 4 min mile. Did you idiots really think he can't jog 3 hours for a marathon?
Man is also around 160 (?) pounds and had 47 second quarter ability.
The physical traits that allow someone to become an elite mid distance runner generally hurt one's ability to put up high level marathon times.
3:00 seems like a pretty decent result for Symmonds.
Surely you don´t expect the regular LR idiots to understand this?

Surely, you troll. Was he irrelevant when he won the US title in 2015?

800 runners are typically not even good at 5k's, and a low percentage of them can even run a good mile.
Here are examples of a few, Harbig, Elliott, Moens, Snell, Ryun, Aouita, Coe, Rudisha.
As far as I know, only Snell ever ran a marathon, in 2:40, and the training for it was quite hard for him.
I'm interested to see what Symmonds can do. Most likely he won't take it seriously, will run in the 2:50s or so his next outing, and won't ever go much faster then that.
It's hard to get very excited about a world class mid-distance guy - who is still relatively young - running three hours for a marathon.
And does anyone really care how many miles he put in? It's like saying, in high school I only ran 12 miles/week but ran 5:19 for 1600m!!!
Maybe he should have run more mileage and run much faster than three hours.

There's a lot of lowbrows in this thread that are assuming Nick actually gave two sh*ts about training as hard as he could to get the most out of himself at the marathon for this race....
Also, by your logic, Usain Bolt was a pro runner not too long ago - he should be able to be sub3 too right?
Idiots.
Well, he's a RETIRED world class athlete. So what exactly should retired pro athletes be doing? Sitting on their couches getting fat and eventually broke? Apparently a former pro runner having a FUN with running and promoting his new livelihood is a Letsrun sin. *Eye Roll*

Usain Bolt didn't blast himself on YouTube about running a marathon and posting every run he ever did months leading to his marathon debut. If Nick didn't want the criticism then don't put your neck out so far. Nick did pretty good for his first marathon, but not as good as most people would have expected especially if you're gonna up play yourself on YouTube. Just sayin'

I guess the Run Gum didn't work its magic like Nicky wanted it to. ??
News Alert: The major marathons won't be switching from Gatorade High Endurance to Run Gum.

Symmonds wasn't training to run a fast marathon.
He's retired, and he doesn't give a sh*t about dipshIts like you.

Nick Symmonds trainings from July to December with two weeks off in October and runs 3:00:05 at the Honolulu Marathon
Ryan Trahan resumes training for ten days and runs 2:59:16 at the BCS Marathon
Just curious, what does everyone here think of this?
I was gonna bring this up but I doubt many people here know Ryan. Basically, he's a mid-15 guy in HS and ran 18:30ish for the 8k in college. 4:15 miler. Anyways, he quit for 2-3 months, resumed training for 10 days, and ran 2:56 (2:59 officially but it was a long course) while talking to his college buddy on a bike the whole way, smiling and waving while it was live streamed.
Now you are starting to understand. If you can't run 2:20 or better, you aren't a marathon runner.
2:20 in the marathon is like a a 100 m runner running 12.3 for the 100m.
Or a 400m in 53 seconds.
Or an 800 in 2:05
Get it? Its ordinary. Your problem is you all think so small.
and let's remember that Ryan just graduated from HS last year, he didn't even run in college for one full year. Dude did a great job. Now if you compare their physiques though, Nick is much bulkier than skinny Ryan, that definitely makes a difference when talking about marathon running.
