Pentagon officials announced the move Friday to ensure the accuracy of financial information.
The massive audit will reportedly examine every aspect of the department from personnel and supplies, to bases and weapons.
There will be at least 2,400 auditors are expected to examine the pentagon’s estimated $2.4 trillion in assets.
Officials say annual audits will help focus on improving day to day work and help prevent wasteful spending.
“With respect to the DOD audit this week marks the DOD audit,” said chief Pentagon spokesperson Dana W. White. “It demonstrates our responsibility to fiscal responsibility and maximizing every tax payers dollar that is entrusted to us.”
The annual audits are expected to begin at the beginning of next year.
