Still no 40k time for him, hopefully the website is just behind... otherwise he blew up.

Not sure where you saw that, he ran 18:52 between 25 and 30k.
He needed an 8:52 last 2.2k at 40k but couldn't pull it off.

No, he ran 20:09 between 25-30k. Unless the website's wrong.

+1
I'd say 3:00:35 isn't too bad considering his (supposed) training for this... must suck to get so close to 3:00:00 though and not break it. Surely he was gunning for 3 all along and was bsing recently about only gunning for 3:30.
I bet all the Marathon Maniacs and other hobby joggers are going to say that Nick's 3:00+ performance proves how amazingly difficult the marathon is compared to pedestrian distances.
"See, Nick has run 1:42 for 800m, 3:34 for 1500m, and 24:XX for 8k XC, but can't break 3:00 for the full mary and said it's the hardest thing he's ever done! Just like Lance Armstrong said the marathon is harder than the TDF!"
In reality, Nick could run sub-2:30 easily if he got down to his college race weight and actually trained for the marathon.
When they interviewed Nick on tv be said he'd probably be lucky to run under 2:10 for 800m right now. What do you guys think, I woulda thought he'd for sure be under that, is he being modest?
Did he give his chip to someone else?
So impressed with Nick today. What a great athlete!

Modest
Nick Symmonds
???????
Was he smiling when he finished? Pics, please!
Meanwhile, a DNF for Nick Willis after going through 40km on about 2:40 pace? Looks like he pushed it too hard after 30 km. And Will Leer a DNF after running through 30 km just behind Willis. Marathons are hard! Definitely not to be taken too lightly by these middle distance guys. Hope they learned a valuable lesson.
Nick exceeded my expectations. I think though he also downplayed his fitness and preparation. I'm sure it wasn't ideal but I think he wanted to diffuse any pressure from fans/onlookers. Overall strong run.
