It's more than just a courtesy. I gave my two weeks notice once and was promptly told by hr (not my manager) that buried in a personal manual I was never given it stated I needed to give 30 days notice. They didn't pay me for my accrued vacation because of it.
On the non-executive level.
In positions where you handle cash a high % of companies will say do not come in. BUT being retired 20 years now I'm not sure that holds true in todays credit card world. In the retail industry that might include Managers who supervise end of shift register operations.
I've been retired for 20 years
The sabotage replies are cathartic :) Yeah, I am a little unhappy about the situation, but, seeing as how I am leaving on my terms, I'm not going to keep carrying it around. I do not want to taint my new situation with this old baggage.
So, this morning I met with my immediate managers, spoke with my personnel managers, and sent in my formal resignation letter (as instructed). I should have an exit interview in the next couple weeks.
Until then I'm going to be documenting everything I do here so the next person in line won't have to struggle with the responsibilities and processes.
Thanks for making this a Hot Topic!

The reason I bring up the letter is just to CYA in case your boss says you are done immediately. I'm not a labor lawyer or HR, but in many cases, if you put in your 2 weeks and they till you not to come back, you are entitled to that money as long as you are in good standing with the company (Ie not on disciplinary action)
If that really true? I know you already said that you're not a lawyer, but my impression is that there is a large 'mythology' (if you will) surrounding the two-weeks-notice. I do not think that the concept of 'two weeks' is anything but a courtesy.
Two weeks notice keeps you in good standing. All companies have a good standing policy.
If you work there for 10 years, build up weeks/months of vacation, profit sharing, whatever... if you just split without notice you can kiss all that good-bye.
10/10, I actually thought you were serious until the end!
"discus at will"
Well, I'm down to one more week before I'm off for a nice 2-week vacation in the Alps. And with that huge merger that just went down I can't be happier.
So, the lesson here is - Be transparent, don't burn bridges, don't stop looking or believing, and get out early.
