I'm the distance coach at the junior high (7th-8th grade) level. I specifically handle the 400m, 800m, Mile, and 4x400m relay events. I'm trying to put together a general training schedule, and am struggling a bit with how to work in any speed work. The main issue is we have at least two meets every week in the mid to late part of the season. We have league dual meets every Monday & Wednesday, and there are a couple of weeks where we also have an invitational on Thursday. With this schedule, I don't have a whole lot of options regarding where to put anything other than easy/recovery runs. I'm fully aware that, at the junior high level, they aren't going to need as much speed work as they will in high school. Still, I think they could benefit from the occasional interval workout, tempo run, and/or track repeats. I'd love any suggestions on how I can try and work this in.
