I was way overweight a year ago and have spent the last year rebuilding my fitness. I'm shooting for sub-1:09 in Houston, and then I'm start a 14-16 week buildup to a 2:25 attempt in the late-Spring.
There is a local marathon at the end of February that is usually won in ~2:35. It would make a good workout to run with the leaders to 20 miles, then run marathon goal pace the last 10k or so. I imagine this would be fairly strenuous and am not sure if it would be detrimental to my buildup. I feel like it would be a huge confidence booster to complete this as part of my buildup so that I can practice hydration, fueling, and grinding out the last few miles.
Alternatively, I could make the (long) drive to Gasparilla and try for a fast HM. In that scenario I would hope to be in 1:08 shape, and it would be fun to try to lower my HM time.
I'm leaning towards the local marathon. 20 miles @ 6 min pace and then 10k @ 5:30, more or less. I'm nervous about the distance, and it would be a big confidence booster.
