go away.
You live in a place where all the dogs are tame, domesticated pets. Some parts of the world have stray or wild dogs that you wouldn't want getting too close.
Yes, especially if it's a PItbull

Modest but decent troll effort in which you didn't have to even bother pretending it wasn't a troll. You knew the comments would come. I predict 2 pages.
If a dog runs up to me and is about to bite me, you better believe I am punting that thing down the block. Especially if it is small, that thing would go flying. It would be pretty funny honestly
You live in a shallow bubble of tame and coddled dogs. You've obviously never seen an angry dog come charging at you, baring teeth with an instinct to kill. You get all mad at the thought of a misbehaving dog being kicked yet you eat other animals for dinner. I have a St. Bernard (large dog). My dog is trustworthy because I actually take the time to train it, which most idiot dog owners don't even bother with. They just want something to occupy their attention and wonder why their dog doesn't listen or misbehaves.
I learned how to read and react to dogs growing up on a farm.
if a dog charges at you it is probably the hunting reflex.
This has happened to me twice.
I stopped running, crouched down with my hand outstretched like a dog's paw in the submissive form, and used a gentle voice to call it a good boy.
Each time the dog trotted up, sniffed me, then trotted off.

Small annoying barking marmots disguised as cute canines are overpopulating at an alarming rate. Where is Bob Barker when you need him. Time to start deporting all Chihuahuas along with their owners south or north of the border as long as they're out of the country. Don't even get me started on vicious hateful creatures such as Pit-bulls and labra-doodles.

No. It will bite your foot and then run away with your shoe and then you get rabies and die to DEATH. Throw a stick in the opposite direction and it will chase it. Then you can run away!

People who allow their dogs off leash but can’t control them, so they charge barking at other people, should be put to death and their dogs given to responsible owners. Off-leash is only an option available to owners who can actually control their dogs. If someone really did get scared and kicked a charging dog I can sympathize with the kicker, but it’s the owner who needs the kicking, then out to death. My dog does not charge at people ever and that is just proper training.
This is off topic here but must be said I am never afraid to represent myself.

If it were a pitbull or something of the like and was clearly aggressive then of course I'd use force. No more than the dog can handle though, it's not his/her fault their owner sucks. Any other situation I would probably just subdue it or play with it if it's friendly. People only attack dogs out of fear (whether they admit it or not) so when your instinct is to do so then I just think you're a pssy.
This is why I always run carrying a cat - just chuck it towards the dog and keep running.
Generally it is the owners fault and most dogs can easily be convinced not to bite simply by facing them and not panicking. Their instincts prefer socializing to fighting.
If it is a pit then all of this is off the table. In that case some of the problem is the breed itself. Pits need a good owner and some luck to not be walking time bombs. That said you should still face it down because it is a lot easier to handle a 100lb dog from the front then having it get you from behind.

There are worse things
than getting taken from behind ;)
