There was a time for a while where most races Mo would go immediately to the back of the pack, often a good 30-40m behind the front. Primarily just to stay out of trouble and to avoid the rapid start that often happens before people settle.
The idea if good but in my opinion it's also an incredibly bad tactic. Nobody ever capitalized though.
What should have happened is once they notice that, the guys at the front really drive it. Maybe a 58-59, and then follow it with some 61-62 laps and then drive it hard to the end with everything left. The first hard lap helps get Mo worried, and most importantly will splinter the field between Mo and any other contenders. Mo is then left with a 40m gap and really nobody to hang with. With the pace being driven, if Mo want's to close 40m in reasonable time, let's say 3k, he's going to need to cover that in 3:58 pace to catch up. Solo. That's a solo 7:24.
Meanwhile, for that scenario the other guys "only" need to run 7:30 3k. Yea, that's quick, but with 5 or 6 guys working together it's very reasonable. Or you could just extend that out and say the boyz need to run 7:36, and then Mo needs to solo 7:30. All incentive to work together, with each athlete taking 200m turns, because Mo is in deep trouble and the workload is being equally shared.
I really don't think Mo gets back if the field could work together for 7:30, and even if they only do 7:35 or so, Mo is going to be pretty spent if he just soloed 7:30, whereas any elite 5k guy can turn the screws down after a 7:35. It really surprises me nobody ever tried this, because it's so much "free" distance Mo got away with and ought to have been punished for.
