Note: For all races that are combined, awards will be given separately to each age group. Any boy or girl in grades 9-12 is eligible to run in the Championship Race. There is no seed time. Choice of race is an individual preference that should depend on the best choice for a successful race. Runners must run in the Championship Race to qualify for the National Finals in San Diego.

Nike- this attracts the best teams- the best teams have great runners (at least their number 1 is great). The best runners will seek out the best competition.

My beef with FL is that Nike gave them the option to add teams they chose not to, Nike started their own, it's working.

We have several headed to FL. I like that kids can race against their grade/age groups (that may be an option at Nike, too, idk).

Nike may be slightly easier to qualify for nats, since you can get in as a team... but still very difficult.

If you really want an easier path to Nats that will still look good on your resume, check out USATF.

So your advice to the OP is to run Nike? Because the best teams will there and that will give the OP the best chance to qualify for Nationals?

I would think that FL would give the OP a better chance. Because of the team aspect, I assume Loudon Valley (VA) and Milton (GA) will be at Nike.

Having said that, if he has to ask he probably won't qualify either way (as he pretty much conceded).

Agree about USATF but as some state meets have already happened, that may not be an option depending on where OP is located.

You should go to Footlocker. Not that because your chances of making it to Nationals are better there, but because it's the better race of the two where you live.

As an individual qualifier to go to Nationals you'll need to be in the top 5 at the NXR regional. At the Footlocker South regional you'll need to be in the top 10.

Experience wise, both will be great... but imo Footlocker South is better if you want a shot at qualifying and want to try to get a PR since that course is ideal for a fast time.

Thanks. This brings up a couple things I'd been thinking about though: 1)Since you have only have to be in the top 5 not on an advancing team, does that at all even the odds? 2) After the alterations to the Footlocker course, which is faster? I know they're both reputed to be quick, but which might give me better odds of a PR? 3) And lastly, I haven't really done this kind of thing before, but is there any kind of difference in atmosphere or something? Like, maybe one has an interesting experience besides just the racing, or a particularly great pasta dinner or something?

Go ahead and enter Nike cause you won't stand a change against the runners west of the Mississippi River.

USATF is a great option. In our Association, Mid Atlantic, HS runners can skip Association Championships (which are held at Belmont Plateau ) and get a pass into Regionals. It is understood that HS runners generally have state qualifiers or state championship meets during the early weekends in November. You have to contact your Association Chair to get the waiver.

USATF Nationals is December 9th in Tallahassee, FL.

Not necessarily. Even if there are top runner’s that place high for their team, there are only 5 spots for individuals. It makes it more difficult to know how you stand place wise in the race as well. Even with a weaker field, it’s still fewer qualifying spots. With Footlocker, you just need to make sure there is no more than nine runners ahead to know if you qualify, but the field is strong so it will be tough regardless.

In regards to PRs, I’ll use last years’ results for reference.

NXR Southeast Top 5

Girls 17:13-17:49 (256 runners)

Boys 14:54-15:15 (262 runners)

Footlocker South Top 10

Girls 17:21-17:52 (154 runners)

Boys 14:57-15:07 (283 runners)

NXR last year would technically give you the highest chance to qualify. Both seem great for PRs, but usually Footlocker races net more PRs.

Well if you go to nationals, Footlocker tends to be a more inclusive experience. NXN is great if you want to visit the Nike HQ and be surrounded by more runners. Regional wise they are pretty similar but remember that NXN is heavily team oriented so it would be a different atmosphere compared to Footlocker since you’re an individual. Sometimes pros show up at the Nike races so that can be a plus. Pros will be there for 1 on 1 experience if you go to Footlocker nationals though.
