40 min does suck even for a easy run. I bet he could go under 20 in a 5K race!
Seems like he owns a timing company.

Ok, the most important facts that have been unmentioned thus far:
1) that spork shirt is pretty cool
2) 5 miles at 8 flat pace is faster than I could run after even a few months off, so I wont knock him for having a "slow" baseline
3) 5 miles at 8 minute pace is faster than a majority of the population can achieve even with an attempt at training. Im consistently surprised how slow my self proclaimed runner coworkers are compared to all my actual runner friends.
4) That shirt is still pretty sweet. I would pay a few bucks for shirt like that, while you would have to pay me to wear something toolish like a tracksmith shirt
5) Bob Kennedy has a bit of moobs happening there. Im glad he is attempted to get back into a healthy lifestyle.
6) did I mention that I like that shirt?
You gleaned from that photo that he has "moobs"?
You must have been the first in and last out of the locker room in school , pecker checker .

You're projecting and likely reminiscing.

You turds should realize that he was not just a good runner, he was the American record in the 3000 meters (7:30.84), 2 miles (8:11.59) and the 5000 meters (12:58.21). All at once. All of these times would dominate America and be competitive at the world-level 20 years later.
He was the first ever non-African to run the 5000 meters in less than thirteen minutes, and he is still one of only seven non-Africans to do so.
Kennedy was twice state champion in cross country in high school. Kennedy was the 1987 National Kinney XC champion. 3rd place in the Kinney (FootLocker) National XC his Junior year. 4:05.17 for 1600m in HS.
Was 1st, 5th, 3rd, and 1st in NCAA XC Champs. His senior year he also won the USATF National Cross Country Championships, becoming only the second person in history to win both the NCAA cross country nationals and U.S. national cross country championships in the same year.
Anybody else have that great a record? Yeah, Lindgren, Pre, Virgin and Goucher, that is about all.
He also won the Winter Long Course Championship (World Championship Trials) TWICE in 1993 and 2004 (eleven years apart).
The first time he ran the 10k he ran 27:38. Let that sink in for a minute.
Only a waste-of-space would ridicule Bob Kennedy, someone who dominated the sport in America at every level (HS, college, Pro) for 20 years.
My coach would say, "You guys aren't good enough to carry his jock."
You defenders are getting too riled up over nothing.

It's interesting to see how runners are doing after retirement. He could have being going for an easy run anyway. I wonder how fast Gebresalasse can run these days? He must be still in a low/mid 15 minute 5k shape because he is literally still running lots. Would be fun if he shared details of what he is doing. I hope he literally writes a book soon, or shows up to some race. I wonder what age Bekele and Geb will be, when 8 minute miles is literally a race pace for them. They will be in there 80's probably. Daniel Komen is another one I always think about, literally a lot. For him you want to see a comeback, because we didn't get to see enough of him when he was running the best.
Is there a different way to write a book? Different than "literally"? Do people figuratively write books? Ditto for your other stupid references. Daniel Komen doesn't look that great to me and apparently his business is not doing as well as Bob's running store. He is probably a drug addicted loser.
8:00 pace is not race pace for Bob. Probably not 4:10-per 1600 like it used to be but he never went all out and came up with 5:30 pace like you.

Lol, I know exactly where that photo was taken. Missed my chance to meet Bob!
Pretty sure that he owns Athletic Annex. Maybe also expanding into timing as well, seems like a quick and easy way to bring in some extra dough.

I saw him at Eagle Creek back in the early 2000s dominating the hills. Blew right by me.
He use to own Blue Mile.
Do you really need to tear down a greater runner to build Bob up?
No I don't, and I didn't. He held up Gebrselassie and Bekele and Komen as paragons of virtue. I just used him as an example of WHAT IS NOT. I don't feel bad for Komen, nobody forced him to forge checks and I don't feel bad pointing it out.
I'm just impressed that he can still kneel down like that and smile at the same time! #oldrunnerproblems #getoveryourselves #gogoBob

At no point was virtue mentioned at all.
someone needs to teach this dude how to use social media.
you're only supposed to post stuff that makes your life look glitteringly awesome, not mundane and average.
my advice would be to train until you can run 5 miles at 6 minute pace flat out and then take a photo of the watch and share it with the hashtag #easymiles
until then, dont bother.

Apparently those years of no running were worth something.
Bob passed me at eagle creek one day also.
I was running 6 minute pace and this guy jogged by going 5:30s he was jogging and waved. He looked like a gazelle.

It is well known anecdotally that those who train very hard for a very long time in their youth and early adulthood seem to decline more dramatically in middle age and afterward.
And then you have Joanie. Other than recovering from injuries, has she ever taken a break from running?
This guy is super humble and kinda shy. I did see him cut loose at after party in Eugene and he was freaking awesome.
Looks like he is having a great time .
I want all the young guys to remember, it's easy to put on the weight, it's harder to take it off then you ever thought when you were 25.
with two months to go, this is likely the strongest candidate for post of the year. Agreed Ron, agreed 100%. Legend status, once attained, never goes away. Mr Kennedy has this in spades.

I always wonder who starts a thread denigrating a great former runner. This is a running board, so presumably the OP is a runner. Various options:
(1) A bitter old rival of Bob Kennedy whom Kennedy owned in college or as a pro.
(2) A lame hobby jogger that takes shallow pride in being faster than a former Olympian.
(3) An unhinged loner in a basement who just likes to take joy in the downfall of others.
