Maybe he meant a 65" lap was a fast pace for a 1500 or for a 10x400 interval session? He ran substantially faster than that for an all-out lap, and that was post-graduation off of much less training.

Nope. It's 66s at best and probably closer to a 68-70s 400.
The standard conversion factor is multiplying your 200 time by 2.2 (20 second 200 = 44 second 400). And that's for trained people; the average relatively untrained person will rig up and death march that last 100.

Interesting. I know in my 20's I was still pretty quick just playing basketball...but no distance running at all. I was surprised how much of my fast-twitch was still in place just playing hoops 3 days a week.
Once I started training for a marathon, I saw my sprint ability go in the toilet. Working slow-twitch repeatedly killed all the power I had in my legs and I got to the point where I had trouble breaking 30 in the 200m (but could do 12x200 at 32-33 easily).
It just goes to show you how much long slow runs kill your explosiveness.

Genetics plays a big role in any time faster than your PB, but no role in any time slower. That's one of the most tried and tested truths on this board. It's true about sprinting as well as distance running.

I can’t break 30 or 60 literally to save my life. High school men and women go sub-30 and sub-60 easily.
But get this: my PRs are 14:48(5k), 31:31 (10k), 1:11 (half) 2:33 (marathon).
Im an endurance guy. I just can’t sprint. would be cool to close races with a couple quarters under 60 like the pros do but I can’t. Knowing this, instead of making my race tactic kicking, I do surges throughout the race like Kawauchi. I figured if I can’t kick, I can get them during the meat of the race.
The average male who has never had any significant weight issues and in his prime could probably run between 30-35 seconds but I doubt they could easily go sub 30.
