Not a huge surprise as they've been doing this since at least 2011 but I was told by a member of their team that they will be resting 3 of their top 7 at regionals. Casey Clinger, Danny Carney and Jonathan Harper won't run and will rest up for nationals.

I don't agree with that. I think that your regional and qualifying team should have to run at nationals. There shouldn't be any resting.

Interesting that Portland gets destroyed by letsrunners for resting some of its guys at conference but BYU and other teams that rest people at regionals don't get the same criticism

I imagine that they would still finish high enough that they'd get in off of kolas
You know it’s the mountain region right? They could finish 7th or 8th and still go.

Good gravy...runners these days are softer than a baby's a$$. At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon, we raced every weekend back in the early 80s when I was in college. The lone exceptions were the weekends prior to the conference, regional and national meets. What is it about today's runners that they don't even want to compete? What's the point of training if you're going to race only 3 times every fall. Gutless, nutless, pansies....

Just an observer (since I didn't run in college) but maybe they want to make sure they place as highly as possible at Nationals, regardless of everything else? I imagine the more rested your legs are at Nationals, the better you will perform.

I mean, in general I agree with you, but you do realize this is the weekend prior to the national meet?
But why won't they rest runners #3-5 instead? It makes more sense to rest them to score as high up as possible.

this is a really interesting point. i wonder what's optimal: resting 3-5 or 1-2 or some other combination? you'd want to know that performance impact of resting runners in terms of 0:00 or % and then translate that to expected points at Nationals. I guess you'd have to them compare that to the cost of resting runners, which might be the expected point impact at regionals, assuming qualifying at regionals is the only option.
my guess is they're resting the guys who need rest.
If they ran a regular season schedule allowing this to happen, more power to them.
Conference is different. It is a regional "championship," whereas regionals are a qualifying round.
Is NAU sitting out guys?
Alice Wright is sitting out for New MExico and resting also.

clinger has been their 3rd or 4th guy all year and is a freshman so I think it makes a lot of sense to rest him. carney has been their 5th guy and cyestone has said in interviews could be the key to them winning the national championship. harper was the runner up at the wcc championships in 2016 and has some good track times. they probably think he'll be a darkhorse at NCAAs and could do damage control in case one of their top 5 has an off day. their 1-2-3 will probably be able to recover better than anyone else between regionals and nationals because of the work they've done this year and won't be as affected by the race. as someone else said they're in the mt region so they could realistically take 7th place and they'll still be in. they'll probably end up being like 4th and be more than fine.
