"Darkhelmet" obviously has no idea what he (a fair guess) is talking about.
Most world-class runners, in unpaced marathons on record-quality courses, run times that are nowhere near what they can hit in time-trial conditions. Even Shalane, with the performance of the day and the performance of her lifetime, was still 5:29 slower than what she ran in Berlin.
(I wish there were some good way to ban people who throw around unfounded suggestions about "peds," race-fixing, and other shady practices. They demean the sport and honest competitors, they rarely add much of any value to on-line discussions, and they're terribly tiresome.)
