A 2:57 marathon is the equivalent of 38:20 for a 10K. You're basically there already. Just do a basic build up, put in some 10K-specific workouts and some easier workouts at faster paces, and then go PR.
You've totally got this. But like others said, I'd throw in a little time at 10k pace or faster. Alternate that long tempo with a fartlek session or something. No need to go crazy with the track or mile repeats. Just go a little fast sometimes. Otherwise I fear you might find yourself stuck in the 38s, but not under it.
Actually, I'm changing my mind. Go do it on your current training and see what happens. If you're close, just keep racing 10ks. If you do't get it after 2 or 3 tries, then add the fartleks (or something).
I hope so
I think you can do it! I just ran 2:52 for the Chicago Marathon. I haven’t done any formal 10K races since high school over 25 years ago but I did run a 36:10 10K during a 10 Mile Track Tempo Run (58:27) in my buildup to Chicago.

How about informal 10K, ya know the ones where you're not wearing a tuxedo?
