Much has been written about the opioid epidemic. In my own experience I have known 2 people that have overdosed in the past three months (both were in their mid twenties). Many people advocate for abolition of drug laws. We have tried that with marijuana in my home state and it has been ineffective (violent crime has increased, the number of panhandlers has increased and crime in general has not gone down as many advocates claimed it would). Would it be more humane to implement a Singapore City type of policy in this country (mandatory detox for users and death penalty for suppliers)? The only reason I ask is because of the effectiveness of the Singapore policy. They have seen drug use drop by over a third in the past twenty years, the number of drug dealers they execute each year has dropped from 50 per year early on to 4 a year in recent times, and they have a drug overdose rate that is about 1% of what ours is per capita. Not to mention the impact it would have on violent crime, gang activity, human trafficking, etc. In this instance, would capital punishment of suppliers be more humane than allowing the system to continue and watch people kill themselves with drug use?
