Rule #1 about xc. Don't pay attention to times unless it's on a famed course where things don't vary much based on conditions like VCP or Holmdel. If it's a grass course, times can change a ton (or might be short).

Rule #1 about making up #1 rules: Don't think in black and white terms.
Yes, a 5K on a cross-country course is not the same as a 5K on a track. I think most people get that.
This, however, does not translate into "Don't pay attention to times" or "Times don't matter."
If the course used at this meet in Salt Lake City is 5,000 meters, and I'm assuming it is simply because it's used for a state championship, then the times are not irrelevant. The only thing you can say for sure is that times on a track would be faster (I assume you acknowledge this).
Regardless of how well acclimated these kids are to altitude thanks to most of them having lived there all of their lives, the density of sub-16s is unusual given Utah's three million people.
And for those pointing out that these kids come from better-off families than kids in other states, congratulations. Maybe one of you can write a groundbreaking sociology masters thesis defending the radical claim that kids who grow up in more affluent households tend to be more successful in sports and in other ways. I would even bet that a lot of rich kids who can barely write complete sentences can get into colleges like Stanford and Harvard.
I have no reason at all to defend Utah per se. I live in Mass., like I said. I don't know why every thread about Utah here has to turn into a Mormons vs. reality argument. Come to think of it, I don't know why every thread about everything on this board has to turn into a negativity-fest. I know that it wouldn't happen if the board were moderated to any meaningful extent, but that will happen the very day Meb dunks from the free-throw court and no sooner.
I spent three months in St George recently and found it very enjoyable, beautiful, clean, quiet and welcoming, despite my being far from religion of any kind. A bit like a time trip into the 50s/early 60s, a great change from my grungy liberal hometown. For nightlife I made the trip down to Vegas a few times, a trip into a very different Bizarro World, but enjoyable as well.
I'm pretty sure they said it was 3 miles, not 5K.
Oh my god, you started this thread and you didn't even know the length of the course. smh
Mormon power!
