High School Male - Fatigue Issue - any help would be appreciated.

Higher resting HR indicates overtraining. You seem to be unwilling to accept the possibility as his peers are not showing symptoms. Everyone is different. He simply has done too much for what his body can handle. What was his summer training like?

Not at all unwilling to accept it as a possibility - in fact, that is my guess. However, hoping there is some kind of test or markers that could be checked. Definitely may be too much, especially with a big pick up in school work load - stress is stress (whether training or other).

Sumer training seemed to go really well. No signs of issues, but maybe this is a delayed response to too much over the summer? Just pointed out his peers as a bit of a control group since they have similar histories (PR's and training).

Mono? Blood clots in lungs? Over-training?

Stop using the heart rate monitor!

with mono, would there be some kind of sickness of general fatigue as well? He feels well in general and really just fatigues very quickly on aerobic efforts. I'm leaning towards the overtraining angle, but was curious if there are ways to test for it to come up with a solid diagnosis. What about ways to dig out of the hole?

HR monitor is just providing data, not being used to plan training, etc. Just thought I would include the info if it provided any insights.

How about jog a mile a day until he feel fresh again? If he has good ability which is suggested by the fact you are blogging about him, he will not lose a lot as long as he keeps exercising.

Might be the path. The past 3 weeks have been a substantial reduction in training and it still seems to be sliding down hill. Hasn't been quite as drastic as a mile a day, but probably 30-40% of previous volume with no real workouts. Wondering how long it should take to see a change. Thanks for the idea.

If it ends up being overtraining, is there some prescribed amount of time to take off or lower training? Are there indicators that can be used to determine when it's time to start back up? Anything that can be done to help the process along other than rest?

I'd be interested in these questions too.

I would agree with you that they don't point to any issues.

Athlete needs to rest

I had something similar happen to me in HS. I ran like a beast sophomore year and made the state podium in a few events. Junior year I had zero energy and could barely make it around the track. Spent the year as a mid packer. Senior year, absolutely crushed it. The only thing I can figure is that I grew 6-8 inches junior year.

Might want to check for Lyme.

wouldn't Lymes have other symptoms? General fatigue, etc?
