It definitely won't hurt you, so there's no reason to not do it.
In regards to actual benefit, it could definitely help with some upper body stability, or when you're in the last painful 150m of the 800m and you need to really pump your arms. If they've got a lot of power behind them, you're in a good place. I wouldn't over do it however, to the point that your lats or shoulders get so big that it starts hindering your form a little bit.
