I just did my first marathon on a hilly course in 2:44:32. That was off 12 weeks of training 95 miles/ week average (Daniels plan). I ran the first half in 1:24 and the second in 1:20 and felt very good at the finish. As it was my first marathon I think I paced the first half a little conservatively as I didn't really know what to expect after going 20 miles at marathon pace. I'm 45 but have only been training for 2.5 years as was never a real runner before and due a major foot injury in a motor vehicle accident 9 years ago that largely limited any running until relatively recently. I think I will do my next marathon in May 2018 and will continue to do lots of mileage, 2 -3 workouts per week etc. Is it reasonable to expect to go faster than 2:40 by then on a faster, net downhill course? I know it gets exponentially harder to go faster. My fastest 10k was 35:20 a few weeks ago the day after I did a hard 24 mile workout, but I think I could have gone about a minute faster if I didn't run so hard the day before. Was supposed to be a recovery run but felt good cruising along so just kept going and was not gassed at the finish. Thanks for anyone who has any thoughts on it.
