since you know a lot about smoke and gasses, why does inhalation of helium make the voice high pitched? also why can't you just leave the cat to its destiny up the tree. I don't like cats

How much do you make?
How much will you get in pension? How much did you contribute to this pension?
When can you retire on full pension?
Are you in a union?
Firefighter salary tops out at around 70g here.
Most make more because of overtime.
NOT sure of the pension numbers. I know that if I work 40 years my pension will be around 80% of my highest year of earnings. Overtime not included. No cost of living increases. We don't pay into social security. No doubt that the pensions are generous, but the health risks are equally harrowing. Firemen die young.
Yes, I am in a union.
What is the most traumatic thing that you've ever encountered on the job?

I once got a pretty bad burn. I was putting a meatloaf into the oven and my arm hit the rack.
Also, I once sat watch all night long while the cable was out.
Are you embarrassed that some people volunteer to do what you get paid for doing?

Nope. As I said, i take tremendous pride in what I do.
When I see you guys in the grocery store getting lunch at the deli counter, why did you guys drive over in the fire truck and park in the fire lane? Your fire station is only about 200 yards from the store. Can't you just walk?
Because if a run came in, it would take significantly less time to get on the truck if it was parked out front.

I'm not even a fireman. 100/100
Do you ever feel guilty about sitting around in a chair all day, maybe responding to a fender bender or a cat in a tree, while robbing the public blind with your absurd pension?

This has already been addressed, but I'll elaborate.
No, I've never had a single pang of guilt about my occupation. Quite the opposite. We're paid to respond to emergencies, and to PREPARE to respond to emergencies, and we do it well. I wake up every day proud of what I do. I sincerely love coming to work each & every day.

Thanks, I wish I could get paid to lift weights and chill with my bros all day and retire at 55 with a fat, guaranteed lifetime pension in exchange for 1-2 dangerous calls per year.

Then you should have taken the fire test.

Why is saving a cat in a tree so important?
You send a hook and ladder and a pumper truck, so 20 guys, but first calling the local news to get a camera crew and reporters to the scene to document your nonsense. That fireman giving mouth to mouth to a cat is another photo op you act out in order to get favorable PR to boost your pensions.
Why are you responding to me with that silly post? I'm just asking if firemen are "loaded?" Nothing more...nothing less. 😆
Have you seen the movie Backdraft? ;)
How many of you are alcoholics/drug addicts?
What % go out on bogus disability?

You mean that cheesy movie starring Kurt Russell? I think that set the fire departments back much like the T.J. Hooker series embarrassed law enforcement. 😄
Which one of my co-workers are you, Fake Laz? Seems I'm not the only Philly FF on LRC?
Anybody who posted to this thread would gladly take the job, only they weren't smart enough or lucky enough to get in. I respect you guy's.
But I have to ask, do you have stickers all over your personal vehicle saying you are a fireman?
Also do all your shirts and jackets say so and so fire department,?
