why not
No, Kawauchi has a faster PR.
Still? When has he ever beaten him?
Not a NOP fan at all, but still feel compelled to clarify that Rupp does work full time. As a professional athlete.
What job is he qualified for?
Rupp might be faster if he had a job. I know Robert De Castella worked a job to keep his mind off running to prevent going OCD and over training.

I think like this . Rupp is more talented than Kawauchi. No problems for Rupp to have a office job and be better than Kawauchi.
But as I see it ,Rupp is not coached so far at the marathon up to his talent has shown at shorter distances. If I had been Rupp`s coach I think it could take at most 2-3 years to get him down to 2.03-2.05. Easy to say, but I am convinced it would happen.
Yes Rupp could get a job lets say unloading trucks 6 hours a day, 5 days a week (30 Hours a week is considered full time in some places) and still beat Kawauchi, heck he would still have beaten all the American Born athletes 10k and up with a job besides running, as mentioned DeCastella also Jerome Drayton (still the Canadian marathon record holder) in fact most top runners up to the 1970's-1980's had other jobs

Thanks JS. At what pace should he run 20x400?

Why do you think it's a coaching issue? There doesn't seem to be a lot of info about AlSals techniques so what makes you think your training would be better for him specifically? Not troll...real question
I wasn't under the impression he beats him now.

Same here. That raises the question, what is Rupp afraid of? Is racing Kawauchi not Rupp-certified?

Yeah, I'm not sure how big an advantage not having a job outside of running actually gives but I'd bet it's not as big as many people think. In Sweden, Kjell Erik Stahl worked during his career. If there are Swedes who are only running none of them have come close to his best times. Guys like Clayton, Hill and Ian Thompson worked full time and their times are better than nearly all professional Aussies and Brits are running. I'm pretty sure that Steve Jones was still in the RAF when he ran his fastest marathon. Bill Rodgers was all of 29 seconds faster as a full time runner than as a hospital orderly. I'd certainly rather be a full time runner than a hospital orderly but that's a small difference. How many Aussies are running the 5 and 10 faster than Ron Clarke did?
NO; plus Yuki is CLEAN
If Rupp worked full time it would be a cushy luxury job at Nike, doing some kind of marketing or product design task. He'd get 3 hours of leave in the mid-day to do his workout. He'd get massages while he responded to emails. If Rupp worked full time at a non-running job, absolutely nothing would change.
A very good point HRE! :)
By the way Kasimirz Zimny`s coach was Tadeusz Kepka as I know from my book "How they train" ...
