Did he have one at the start of the race?
I will admit that is pretty baller if he ran it without a watch.

He must have just read Alex Hutchinson's final RW article. Wasn't one of his tips to run without a watch?
Cool enough, but I hear they hired a pacer for him. Did the pacer have a watch?
They run behind a car that shows the elapsed time and projected finish time. No need for a watch if you're in the lead group other than to keep a record of your own data.

Well he had to be confident he'd be with the truck!
And besides, what about mile splits?
Not on Strava.... Doesn't count.
Galen has never worn a watch in any previous marathons or track races. He is a RACER, not a time trialer. His mission is to race and react to moves being made, not paying attention to splits. This is a much bettter way to race by feel.

He never breaks records, so watches don't matter.
yo don't need a watch when you're going for the win.. simple as that. Many runners like myself get caught up with pace and forget the entire reason why we step on the line. Racing without a watch is nice because it leaves you anxious and anticipates you to run faster.

By the same token the best cyclist in the world uses his computer religiously, constantly staring at it numerous times every minute.
I think you just need to know how that stuff influences you, and decide what's best for you. I can imagine some doing better with, some doing better without.
there is a thread that asks about WHICH watch he wore and this one about him wearing NO watch...
I heard that he is a turd nugget.
except that he does have a few AR records.....
That explains it, thanks wrote:

"VERY COOL" and "pretty baller". Yep, that's Galen Rupp

The “racer†had also never won a major race until this one.
No need to wear a watch on the track. All the ARs Rupp has (that I can recall) were set on a track, most prominent of which is track 10k AR.
On a track you do not need a watch because you can see the trackside clock every 400M, people can yell splits, and that 10k was set up as a record attempt with very good pacers and other athletes (just follow them and no need to look at a watch).
As I remember he did not take the lead until ~870m to go in that 10K record race. Just follow the pacers/others for ~92% of race.
What other ARs does Rupp have that have not been set on a track?
Chicago likely had a lead vehicle with a clock on it. No need for a personal watch. All big marathons have digital clocks every mile.
Rupp does wear a watch for workouts sometimes. But he has little need for a watch when you have AlSal tracking your every move and yelling splits, even during road training runs.
He has worn a watch for tuneup races, like his recent half marathon.
Seems like he was wearing a watch when Solinsky spoiled his previous track 10K record attempt.
I suggest Rupp start wearing a watch in races. It might come in handy if he goes for a fast marathon and can no longer see the lead vehicle with clock after that vehicle and the 2:04 people pull away from him He may want a watch to see if he can break 2:09 or whatever.

Agreed.
In contrast to Meb's wins in New York and Boston, Rupp's win merited two brief sentences in a tiny sidebar wire news item in the New York Times.
How about that? First American born male winner of a marathon major in decades and essentially nothing? I'm guessing that the non-news character was not at all about his association with Salazar, which probably the sports editors did not know about anyway.
It would be cool if he was a human and not a science experiment.
He has an internal watch that displays all of his splits on his cornea.
Last American-born male to win Boston, Greg Meyer, 1983
Last American-born male to win New York, Al Salazar, 1982
Last American-born male to win Chicago before yesterday, Greg Meyer, 1982
Last American-born male to win London, Dick Beardsley, 1981
Whatever you think of Rupp and Salazar (as a coach), you'd think there'd be more news about this victory. Even if you include Khannouchi and Meb in the usual American winners, there is just Meb at Boston three years ago, at New York eight years ago, and then you get wins from Khannouchi in 2002 at Chicago, 2001 in London, some others, and then I think no one until 1983.
