Do you all still think it's about freedom?
Do you all still think it's about freedom?
Yes
How else would the ruling classes keep the peasantry occupied?
China has been in AFG for years. USA has been in AFG for years. China is cutting business deals on the ground in AFG. China is mining in AFG. China is extracting billions in precious metals. USA govt. is spending billions in AFG. AFG is a give away to weapon contractors.

What about the opium in AFG?
Why didn't Obama get us out of there, or close down Gitmo?

Nobody with any sense of intellectual integrity ever thought it had anything to do with freedom.
And I really wish the American people would put their thinking cap on and tone down the chest thumping with regards to North Korea. Please appreciate the fact that everything you know about North Korea is propaganda. The same as was true with Afghanistan and Iraq.

What do the Japanese and South Koreans think?
Just imagine the infrastructure in The States that could have been created over that amount of time with the amount of money spent. Instead, more lives are lost, contractor's pockets are bursting at the seams, and Afghanis are still digging in the dirt.
We've been in Japan 70+ years. Also Germany.
a big joke. us has had no effect in central asia, east asia, middle east. just an annoyance like so many other pain in the asses.
Since the defeat of White US, UK, Fr imperialism in the 1950's thev'e been ignored wholeheartedly in Asia It's amusing how they keep self-promoting themselves when no one in Asia cares about them.

What about it?
There is more there now (by an order of magnitude) than there was when the US started.

James Madison thought so:
Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people. The same malignant aspect in republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and in the degeneracy of manners and of morals engendered by both. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.

US govt. civilians and US military have attempted (sort of) to persuade Afghans to grow more food crops and grow fewer poppy crops. That's the Puritan nature in US. China does not have time to worry about Puritanical values as said values relate to other nations.

Same as in Africa.
The locals want freedom and independence and are fighting very hard to eliminate the American Crusaders.

In March, 2005, the State Department's International Narcotics Control Strategy Report warned that as a result of the explosion in opium production, "Afghanistan is on the verge of becoming a narcotics state."
The language in the Report is not so blunt these days, but even the most careful bureaucratic language makes it clear things are only getting worse:
Illicit narcotics production and trafficking flourish in Afghanistan...Poppy cultivation remained at near historically high levels...Poppy eradication declined significantly in 2016...Afghanistan has one of the highest substance abuse rates in the world....many government officials directly engage in and benefit from the drug trade...The illicit cultivation, production, trade, and use of narcotics undermine public health and good governance in Afghanistan, while fueling corruption, providing funds for insurgents, and eroding security.
The bottom line, put in terms only a bureaucrat could love:
The Government of Afghanistan’s commitment to addressing the serious problems associated with the cultivation, production, trade, and use of illicit narcotics will continue to be tested in the years ahead.

What do the Japanese and South Koreans think?
1) I don't know.
2) I don't care.
3) Probably the same that Pakistan thinks of Afghanistan and that Kuwait thinks of Iraq.
