Me and my teammates normally go out for heavy drinking once a week in season, and maybe knock back a few with dinner on one or two other days, but I've been doing a lot of research lately on the negative affects alcohol has on training with blood toxicity, dehydration, and ruining sleep cycles. Changing the partying culture isn't really an option since we've had decent success in a strong conference. And it's college so we're being realistic here. Obviously we cut out the heavy stuff for the postseason.
Honestly, I feel like switching to recreational drugs could be more beneficial for us. Does anyone have experience dealing with regular drug use while running competitively? Something with minimal withdrawals ideally. Access wouldn't be an issue since we go to school in a pretty liberal area and there's a lot of hippy types on and around campus.
i'm in long term recovery from drugs and alcohol and this question really sounds like something only an addict would ask, for what it's worth
any drug you use will have negative effects on running. so here's my take:
weed will cause you to eat a lot more, and in my experience I would eat all kinds of garbage, especially later at night. can feel fun to run while stoned, but for lots of people it just makes you tired, lazy, and hungry.
methamphetamine - well, meth was actually my drug of choice. And I would use and then go running and it was insanely dangerous and ridiculous. My heart rate data from then is completely crazy - resting heart rate was almost double what it is now that I'm sober and it would spike up to 180-190 when using and running. And if you think alcohol messes up sleep - try being on speed and keep a regular sleep schedule. And it's insanely addictive to a degree people who haven't used it probably cannot understand.
Adderall is just a slightly tamer version of meth.
Psychedelics - who the f would want to trip and run?
