For a female at age 60 to run 2:59:59 that would be a level 10 (gold) effort on my age-graded scale, and equal to a young elite female running a 2:22 marathon. I think that is about what Joanie ran in her prime.
I had Joanie at a 78.6 VO2max and that was the highest for a female athlete recorded in any sport in the world. Her max was equal to what I got for Alberto Salazar, but his economy was better, which allowed for a faster time in the marathon.
As you age, economy gets worse faster than does VO2max. She has kept stressing her body functions, and not gained much weight, which has kept them in good shape.
He addresses physiology strengths and weakness but not the mechanical which gets us all of over time. Degradation of VO2's happens, the wear and tear on the bones as we just don't heal as quickly. Things like arthritis creep in.
That's Sho-aaahnnnnn Bee-nowit Sahm-hew-owl-zuhn...from Cah-pe Eelisthbith, May-a-n, in the Unitas Zaitzamair-ca.
She appears more muscular now than in her peak.
