The injury bug shows runners of all ages no mercy. Sub 3:00 hour marathon attempt at age 60 will have to wait.

It's pronounced Ho-on (Joan). Like Joel (Ho-El) only para las personas de Mexico
This is disappointing.
She must have been training very intensely for this and is stopped before even getting to the start line.
I hope another attempt is in the cards at the 2018 Chicago Marathon.
bummer. I'm running Chicago (my first marathon) and am also shooting for sub3. I was hoping to run w her!!
Disappointing for sure. I know she's been interviewed regarding her activism. But has anyone talked to her specifically about her training? I'd be interested
to read.
Even been to Maine? They don't pronounce any of the French names as if they were French. They have their own town of Calais, and pronounce it "Callous."

Nothing that controversial, I wasn't implying that it was. Just that a fair amount of press that I've read has been around her interest in environmental issues, not about her training. Which for someone that's 60 looking to run under 3 hours would be very interesting to read.
Ever been to Michigan?
It wasn't Dee-troyt originally.
It was détroit - like day-twah

Joan is her own worst enemy. She does not know how to back off and rest.
She pounds most runs. I would guess this knee issue was around and she just would not take the time or rest until it broke.
She is aggressive with her training runs, period.
just posted by Jack Daniels on his facebook page
For a female at age 60 to run 2:59:59 that would be a level 10 (gold) effort on my age-graded scale, and equal to a young elite female running a 2:22 marathon. I think that is about what Joanie ran in her prime.
I had Joanie at a 78.6 VO2max and that was the highest for a female athlete recorded in any sport in the world. Her max was equal to what I got for Alberto Salazar, but his economy was better, which allowed for a faster time in the marathon.
As you age, economy gets worse faster than does VO2max. She has kept stressing her body functions, and not gained much weight, which has kept them in good shape.

You could substitute the name of about 90% of the masters mid-distance and long distance racers out there for Joan's name and the statement would be equally accurate :-)
so sorry she is injured, really hope she can still take on sub3 at 60 somewhere else soon
but I love that photo, she looks awesome and makes me feel less like a freak about my arms seeming too muscular, I mean what is up with my body, I do zero upper-body work and my arms are so big
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?

Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
