I've had pain in my Achilles for over two years. It's such a depressing injury... If anyone can help me start running again, I would be extremely happy.
I'm 25/male. I ran from 2004-2014 without Achilles issues, and that includes my collegiate career running 70+ mpw. I ran in a stability shoe until 2013 when I switched to a neutral shoe (Pegasus) because I noticed I had started doing more forefoot striking and not pronating as much. I have great form, I do notice that since the pain started my gait has changed a little. I'd describe the feeling as my left leg feeling shorter than my right.
Starting in early 2015, I noticed getting out of bed that my Achilles would be in pain on the first few steps. A very unnoticeable tiny hard bump had developed on the lower inside part of the back of my foot, on the Achilles. Then it was hurting each step during the first mile of my runs. Then the first two. Then I had to stop running, and after maybe two months it was back to normal. This cycle of stopping running for weeks/months, running and getting into good shape for a few months, and then stopping again has gone on for over two years now
I only feel the pain on stepping with that foot and after the tendon hasn't been used in a while (waking up, starting up runs) or if it's hit by something (a bike pedal hitting my Achilles feels almost worse than stubbing my toe).
I went to a well-respected podiatrist regularly in early 2016 before giving up on him. He said it was insertional achilles tendinitis initially, then Haglund's deformity at a later visit (see X-ray here--

-- maybe this is Haglund's since the tendon is so close to the heel bone?) and I've done the following treatments since, all during periods when I was not running:
-weighted standing heel raises on flat ground (religiously, no effect)
-walking boot for 6 weeks (done this twice, not much help)
-cortisone injection (helped for a week or two)
-electrostim treatments (helped for a few days)
-sleeping in a Strassburg sock (no effect - screw those things)
-using a compression sock targeting that area (no effect)
-using tons of supplements that promote tendon health (no effect)
-heating/icing (no effect)
-going up a shoe size at a shoe store's recommendation (no effect)
The only solution so far is stopping running for a few months. Not very reasonable if I ever want to set PRs...
I know dry needling and cutting out the heel counter of my shoe can help too. Maybe I need to see some other type of doctor? Or maybe get another type of analysis to determine if it's Haglund's? Any ideas?? Thanks all.
