What are the excuses, Rupp haters?
What are the excuses, Rupp haters?
it bothers me not a jot.
I'm sure mindweak has an opinion on this.
And WEBB has the fastest mile!!!!!!
Who would've thought two white Americans would be world leaders for this long????????
It doesnt bother me one bit personally, but I think you're forgetting that he was on a "likely doping" list reference the Fancy Bear's hacked WADA suspicious/likely doping documents.
Rupp's listed as "likely doping" with a 3-star (+++) priority status....not quite up there with Jager's 5-star performance (+++++). 😄
Not a bit since he was beaten where it most matters, in the olympics over the same distance not once but twice making his faster 10 k time useless. In the marathon his best time 2:09:58?
I don't hate him, G-d forbid, but for a guy like me who has been following long distance running since 1976, I would say he is the best among the Americans but among the rest in the world...overrated.
Here's a question for you from another guy who's been following long distance running since 1976. Do you remember poring over those Track and Field News world rankings in the late 70s and 80s, when nothing else came close to the analysis of the track scene from the "bible of the sport"? If you do, you'll doubtless recall at the top of their ranking criteria stood "Honors Won." With an Olympic Silver and Bronze, I'd say Rupp is not overrated one bit internationally. To those who claim championship results are watered down because of the limit of three per country: in London 2012 Rupp beat all of the Kenyans and all of the Ethiopians. In Rio 2016 he was beaten by one of each.I'm not American and I don't mind Rupp. But I'm ceaselessly amazed at American running fans' willingness to tear him down.

Doesn't bother me at all. How much does it bother you that he's not even close to breaking into the top 500 times in the Marathon? Will he ever?
The last time I tried seriously to figure out how long I've been here I dated it to the origin of the phrase "Rupp certified," which turned out to be a lot older than I thought. I think I've been here a decade now.And I continue to be amazed that people dislike Rupp as much as they do here. I understand the various arguments (privilege, Alberto, slight social awkwardness, etc) but he's likely the greatest long distance runner America has ever produced and he's treated appallingly here.

Mindweak and Beatiful Day are currently typing their babbling, incoherent responses, guaranteed to reference Rupp as a "28-low guy".......wait for it, wait for it........

I haven't seen anything from them in a few days. Maybe they went on a romantic weekend getaway together.
Another interesting stat... here's a list of men who won medals in both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics the 5K/10K/marathon (the events Rupp competed in):
Mo Farah - 5K/10K gold in both 2012 and 2016
Galen Rupp - 10K silver 2012 and marathon bronze 2016
That's it.

If you've been following the sport since 1976, and a 26:44 10,000m, a sub 13 5000m, oly silver medal, oly bronze medal, and 2nd at the Boston marathon is overrated, I'm not sure what to tell you. Basically everyone except the top few runners in the world are overrated?
Why would anyone run down any athlete (except for dopers or cheaters)
The sport is hard enough, and clearly that athlete is better than you. Real athletes don't vilify their competitors. It seems to be only those who don't achieve as much.

Let me repeat myself in case you couldn't read it... I would say he is the best among the Americans but among the rest in the world...overrated. I gave him more respect than most people here do.
So you say his 10k is overrated because he didn't win even tho he beat some impressive runners. Then you bring up his slow marathon time but fail to mention he did medal. So which is it, time or placing in championship race that a runner should be judged on?
Rupp's fast 10K showings don't bother me at all!
And I think it would be awesome if Rupp had run the 10 mile championships last weekend, half marathons all over the place, Bix, National XC, World XC, the Saint Silvester Road Race, those 30K races they always have in Japan, went for the US hour record, possibly the world hour record, etc.
You know, stuff in his wheelhouse. Because while a bronze medalist in the Olympics and runner up at Boston and winner of the US Marathon Trials, I don't really see Rupp as a marathoner. Tell me you could have seen him with Kipchoge and Adola the other day. Seriously?
Rupp is a 2:08-10 guy who might someday run an 07 if the conditions are right. You can disagree with me, but good thing for us that he's running at least one more marathon so we'll eventually know.
Adola best time at 10,000m is 27 mins, but this man nearly beat Kipchoge and ran 2:03 in berlin!
Now put that in your pipe and smoke!
10000m means squat. Half marathon is a better predictor of marathon ability and speed, and Rupp has never run under 60!
It doesn't bother me at all. He is welcome to his Special O ribbon.
Anyone who follows the sport knows that the track 10,000 has been piss-weak for years, far over a decade in fact.
All of the talent is racing the half-marathon and marathon on the roads, for real money, not time-trialing 10,000s (which would have nearly zero benefit to most East African runners).
Look, 26:4x is not fast for current HM/marathon elites.
Ever heard of Josphat Menjo? When that relative unknown and unaccomplished runner decided to TT a 10,000 by himself in Finland some years ago, he dropped a 26:56 totally solo, lapping club runners over and over. He must have been pretty good with that ability, right?
So what else did our man Menjo do? 8th at WC. And he never broke 12:55 in the 5000 or 1:01 in the HM. Do you think a large crop of 2:03-2:05 guys aren't 10 seconds quicker over 10k than Menjo, who with his obvious sub-26:50 ability could barely make two Kenyan teams in his whole career?
The fact that Rupp, a 60+ HM runner who is useless in the 5000, has the world's best 10,000 time in years just proves how crap the 10,000 has become.
