What's up with Stanford racing only 3 times before regionals? I've never seen a schedule like this.

How many 8 or 10ks does 1 need before peaking?
Nine of the PAC-12 institutions have athletic departments which focus on academic studies. A.K.A." PAcademic-Nine".
It's not about need, it's about sport. Really you don't need any. With the right coaching and motivated kids you could just do time trials all the way to regionals. If other schools start doing this they are going to need a record based qualification system like other sports.

Yeah...I don't think that's why. Milt just doesn't like to race his teams a lot.

They do it every year. Multiple schools do. It's not that crazy. You must be new here.

Why isn't it that crazy?

Many schools do the same or hold out their top guns until later in the season.
Solution... Shorter distances. Instead of 8 and 10km races for men mix it up. Have 5km or 6km races earlier in the season working up to 8 and 10km at the end. This would enable kids to run a couple more races without he burnout experienced running multiple long distance races. It would also enable mid distance runners to be more competitive at the shorter distances.
Or a relay-style race. 2 guys run 3K twice while handing off to each other. Something different and fun for the team members.
Oregon did the same thing 50 years ago.
This gives the team more time to have longer bout of training between races. They don't have to sacrifice a long run on the weekend or a workout somewhere in the week because of a race on Saturday.
They race every day at practice.
It's terrible for the sport but no one really cares if XC doesn't race. They probably prefer it as they can spend the budget in important things like equestrian and archery.
They aren't hosting a home meet this year due to another campus event (football game) on the normal weekend, otherwise that would be another regular season meet.
A lot of top teams that are expecting to go to nationals have a "season" of conference, regionals, and nationals, and three regular season meets that may be a home meet, pre-nationals, and a "destination" meet to a large invitational.
Regionals are at UW this year, in Seattle, regarded worldwide as the "Rift Valley of US Distance running".

Hard to race your teams a lot, when they are hurt often.
Maybe if they raced a little more and stopped training so hard, they would stay healthy. Sounds crazy to some, but you train to race better, not to train better.

Top two recruiting class 10 years in a row. They should compete for a title EVERY year.

maybe it was over racing in years before?
every year Milt has been over the men's team they've been top 3, and the year before the women's team was top 3
seems like they're doing just fine competing for a title under Milt EVERY year
