As long as they're still breathing Drive By Truckers are the best current rock band.

Fixed.
Check out Deerhoof - a weird mix of punk, noise, rock, and pop with the most talented drummer in the game (Greg Saunier). I slept on them for waaayy too long and am now obsessing over them.
Not rock but still experimental-indie, Animal Collective is probably the greatest band ever. check out Strawberry Jam and Feels to get started with them
Car Seat Headrest, Have a Nice Life, Ariel Pink, Death Grips (hip-hop but with a punk aesthetic), The Microphones / Mount Eerie are also all amazing indie-ish bands.

A thousand times yes. The recent John K Samson record is fantastic, though, and it also completes the Virtute the Cat story...

I will have to listen to his solo stuff. Reconstruction Site is a great album.
The Strokes, Albert Hammond Jr's solo stuff

Yup. One of very few bands that put out four killer albums, in my opinion.
Whenever I get this question Alt-J always immediately comes to mind. I wont listen to them for a while and then once I do I end up listening to them for a few days straight.

Great band, but I don't think they qualify as current at this point.
Also, didn't know you were into the emo stuff, Flagpole!
LCD Soundsytem
Mac DeMarco
Yes I do. It took me a while if I'm honest but it's risen up my list of favorite albums to the point where it's only really below Decoration Day and Southern Rock Opera at this point. I immediately admired their gumption for writing socially conscious songs at this point as very late middle aged white guys (really, you're going to take on Black Lives Matter?...) but, as always, their intelligence and lyrics make it work and now I can appreciate that the album just plain rocks.

Awesome Wave was a brilliant album. It's easily one of my favorites and I've listened to it way too many times. I don't think anything they've done since really measures up, though. Second album was still pretty good. The most recent one doesn't do anything for me.
