Don't they have generators or an alternative source of power?
Can they not run a giant power line from the Dominican Republic

Do you think it is a continent?

Hospitals, airport and other important infrastructure has their own generators. Some individuals own their own generators.
It would take a HUGE amount of generators to run the entire island.
Spoken like a true millennial with no idea how electricity gets from a power plant to your house. Puerto Rico is primarily powered by petroleum generators (in addition to some natural gas and some coal all of which are imported (so if their ports are a mess, their supply line would be interrupted). That being said, their issue is not one of generation, it is one of distribution. It takes a lot of time to re-install power lines, power poles, etc. They do not have thousands of electrical linemen ready to string thousands of miles worth of electrical line and transformers that got destroyed in the hurricane (most of which was installed and built onto over the last 85 years since the last class 4 hurricane hit the island). You can't replace 85 years worth of electrical infrastructure over night. If they can get it done in 4 months, that would be impressive.
I live in Alabama. We have a lot of damns that generate back up electrical power
Does Puerto Rico not have that?!
They are just making up the 4-6 months thing to get more from the US. After every disaster officials like to make things seem worse than they are. Most on the island will have power within a month. Maybe some people in the middle will be longer, but not six months.
Interesting fact about Puerto Rico.
It was originally called Puerto Nuevo but was re-named in 2005 after the breakout performance of one the country's native sons, Uncle Rico, in the blockbuster film Napolean Dynamite.
Wow
VERY well put, thank you for explaining this to people. We are in a pretty bad situation and hopefully we will get back soon and this will wake us up to go after new tech/industry for the island.
Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez will get it fixed on pure star power.

I never get over how self-important the USA is.

Well, I never new that hot air (damns) generated power ... then again, Trump has proven that.

That's great. Too bad dams are what generate back up electrical power.

The problem, as the poster above you pointed out, is the distribution network -- the power poles and lines, the transformer stations, and so on. Much of that network was old, and not built for this kind of storm. To make matters worse, Puerto Rico is on an island. This means they can't do what we do in the US when the power network gets damaged, say by an ice storm. We just put out the call, and utility crews for surrounding states stream in to help repair and rebuild.
Actually Johnny Depp is going to fuel the country with Bacardi 151 Rum (that is pretty close to what Brazil uses for gasoline) and illicit drugs.
Why isn't the US sending help to Puerto Rico? It's a freaking Canadian province, after all. We should help out our Southern friends from the North.
