I was talking to my mom the other day about college running. And she ran in the 70s and she only ran 2 mile xc races in high school (Kansas) with the once a year 5k in Missouri
She said she couldn't handle it. She had to run a 5k in 18 minutes for college and she ran her 2 mile races in 12 or under with like a 19 minute 5k. And her mileage was only 30-35. She said that she didn't realise that she was adding an extra mile for her races and was like "on I ran 6 miles" and her training didn't change. She didn't realise it had to.
My question is how much did your training shift when you go to college. Guys move up to 8ks and 10ks in xc. Girls move up to 6ks.
Like just yesterday I was looking at the alumni report from milesplit. There were a lot guys in my area that I knew of. They ran around 1:58-2:03 for 800 and sub 4:30 for 1600 and sub 9:40 for 3200. 16:00 for 5k
I was looking at some of their race results and they aren't good in my opinion. They're lower end d1 schools. I don't know if it's because it's a longer race or because it's September. This guy I knew that was in my hs division last year (a freshman in college now) ran in the high 28s for a 4 mile race. That's 7 minute pace. I also followed his Instagram running log. He posted in June and the beginning of July but Most of his runs are 6:30-7:10 pace. They're just 4-8 mile runs. He's basically just doing the same thing he did in high school I guess. The only real mileage I saw was a 12 mile tempo run and they were running 5:20-5:50 pace.
I was just surprised that's all.
How did you go about the transition?
Like I hear guys going from 70 mile weeks in high school to 90 mile weeks in college.
