Should I blast a local 5k or visit my family next weekend?

So there is a 5k at the park near my house next weekend and it's the first year for the 5k. Advertising has been very low key and don't think anybody but hobby joggers will show up. Pretty sure I could run sub-18 and win the thing by at least a couple minutes and get first prize.

On the other hand, my family is celebrating my nephew's 2nd birthday and my family wants me to drive to my hometown for that. That might be cancelled if my sister has her 2nd child, which is due next weekend as well.

So should I sign up for the 5k and crush everyone or visit my family? Please help me letsrun, with this moral dilemma.

And just started running again a couple months go, give me a break.

I'll give you an actual answer instead of (just) flaming you.

Go hobby jog the 5k - you can't beat a race near your house, whether you win or not. Waking up and jogging to the start is something you have to take advantage of.

Can't you just do the race and be on the road by 9 or 10am anyway?

Yes, the race starts a 9 am and I probably could be on the road at 10 am. But then I might miss the glory of the prize ceremony!
