I understand that Furman has recruited big talent lately, with a lot of money for scholarships. I was wondering how difficult it is to walk-on to the team, in terms of 5k, mile, 800, 2 mile.

If you can grind out a 4:18 / 9:10 2m they would probably like to talk. I say prob' because some men's teams must keep participation down, to meet gender numbers.

For Men:
Sub 9:20, 4:20, 1:57
If you're a female, just wait until the end of the year when 75% of the team transfers and spots open up.
Furman is an interesting choice. It's a great place if you enjoy dealing with psychopaths, like the Gary's. They didn't even qualify for NCAAs in xc last year for either gender. Then they had a grand total of 0 males and 1 female make indoor NCAAs. Very impressive.
Thanks, I bet I could get those by the end of my senior year.
It's not like their men's team is ranked #1 in the southeast region or anything. Or the women's program is ranked #2. Also the women's team has only had one transfer in the past 3 years
Then why didn't either team even qualify for nationals last year? Rankings don't matter in September, dude. No one has really raced yet. Southeast regional is also well known for being the softest region to make it by far.
For the sake of your running career and mental well being the OP should avoid Furman. Run, don't walk, away from this place.
Absolutely possible. Well within your reach, prs/times, goals, lifestyle, etc. Great post, good job giving us precise information.
Greenville is a fine city (with some issues), while Furman has a "great" (sic) history of unreconstructed racism which they've spent the last few decades trying to address, including throwing the clay eaters (Baptists) overboard.
Wade Hampton was, is & always will be a POS, in case anyone suggests otherwise.
Lol, I'm a junior with a low 16s 5k, and a high 4:30s mile. I'm guessing this year I'll be just under 16 and around 4:25. I wasn't wondering about myself specifically though, I just wanted to know the caliber that they'd be looking for to run with the team.

Cannot speak for the woman's team, but Furman redshirted practically their whole men's team so that they could make a huge push this year. Barring injuries, Furman will be a top 10 men's team at NCAAs this year. You can take that to the bank.

Bump. 26th place team
Top guy was 123rd
Its OK if you stay close to campus. Otherwise Greenville blacks are openly hostile to whites. I know 4 girls who were raped by blacks when they strayed too far from campus and 2 guys who were jumped, robbed, and knocked unconscious. Newspapers wont report any of it for fear of being called Racist.
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
