3:42.7 for the 1500 in high school! Then 2:04.58 in the Boston Marathon.
Excuuussse mmeee for not being "perfect," like you.
I'll turn it back on you. Was it smart that Johnny "Lam" Jones & Herschel Walker trained differently in 70s & 80s than Frank Shorter & Bill Rodgers?

Herschel Walker did a lot of distance running. How is that different than what I said? Walker was also a track star. He worked very hard in all areas! In fact Herschel is a poster boy for my theory. (Except he could not run outside by the time he reached the Vikings.)
In fact I bet he was faster than Johnny "Lam" Jones who probably did not do anything at the professional level. I only remember that guy from college.

Yep. Johnny Lam Jones...2322 yards in 4 NFL seasons. 13 TDs as a WR.
He got a gold medal in the Olympics by replacing Houston McTear in the 4 X 100 relay. He also got into lots of trouble.
Maybe if he had spent some time doing long runs he would have avoided the problems such as Walker did.
Oh yes and Walker....just a few words about him:
3 X All American in College, Heisman Trophy Winner
8225 yards rushing and 84 total touchdowns in the NFL
Olympic Bobsled.
Track & Field look it up! Perhaps his top awards are not as impressive
as Jones because he was too busy playing football but they are outstanding.
In his late 50s, the last I heard of him, he was still doing the same legendary exercise regimen which included a 5 mile run. Daily jack.

What is the slowest 400m time a future major city marathon winner would need early in his career?
If you could run a 2:00 marathon, does it really matter what your 400 speed is?
Sure, because the Marathon would likely be decided by a kick if a couple of guys are at that level.
This is a very interesting point and there a lot different theories around.
Back to the great Hadd and Cabral thread , I think especially Hadd was saying that a runner must
work a lot on his weakness. For example if we a take a ST type of runner and we give him a program
with a lot of long runs without some kind of anaerobic work , the runner will change from a good marathoner to an ultramarathoner. this because his anaerobic system that is genetically weak
without some kind of anaerobic stimulus it will going to atrophy.
For a FT guy we have the opposite, we have a strong anaerobic system but I know also that if I want to
run a Marathon but also an HM or 10K that anaerobic system is not a great help for me except for an
eventual final kick but the problem is to arrive at the end with the other ST guys.
So in this latter case common sense would suggest me to work the best way that I can to improve
my not so strong aerobic system.
The hardest part is here how a FT runner can improve at his max his aerobic system.
Longer base phase with slow runs as the famous Hadd system? I dont know honestly I never try
so many weeks (months) building up the aerobic fitness to his best. But I think it works for everybody
and especially for FT runners with inclusion of some speed works like Hadd 200/200 .
More specifically to work on Lactic threshold a FT runners found easier to
have something like 20 x400 10k pace with 200 rec easy pace
Then long threshold runs . A great example was Mamede and Lopes workouts
What I ve found that the anaerobic system of a FT runner also with a period of great aerobic training
it will take a little to bring it back with the right training.
While is very difficult and it needs a lot of patience and long build up to improve aerobic fitness for a FT runner.
