A tragedy. Devastated. He was a real idol to me, I don't even know what to say.
Holy shitt. I wasn't a fan, but it sucks just the same. Very sad.
Really shocking reminder that there are so many factors in life that we can often overlook. If someone asked me what could end a running career I would say injury, doping bust or aging out, never considering the very real possibilities of death.
I'm stunned.
I've met him. He's real nice. He was coached by my old coach.
Wow
David was an inspiring guy. Seemed like such a hardworking, driven guy, and came a long way. What a tragedy. Condolences to anyone who knew him.
Awful news. He posted a workout yesterday on Strava titled "quarters of death." Make of that what you will. I'm stunned.
NO!!!
I was a fan.
RIP David.
I'm in disbelief. Seemed like such a driven and awesome guy. He had a great career and looked to still have more potential in the sport. Best wishes to his family, this is a devastating loss.
God this is sad. The downhill mile thread entertained me endlessly. Between that and the fanny pack 5k thread, I've never laughed harder in my life.
Torrence was one of a kind. I enjoyed him immensely.
This is horrible news
I was a big fan, loved his interviews and his openness with fans
I can't even believe it
RIP Big Wave Dave
Terrible news. Big Wave was a real character, a really good guy, the Berkeley downhill sub 4 mile was one of the best threads we have seen here, and he was among the best we have had for a long time in his range, 1:45, 2:17 (2:16.76i), 3:33.23, 7:40, 13:16. He ran to the beat of a different drummer, no doubt. RIP
Awful news. Great athlete and of course a big part of the LetsRun community since 2005.
Torrence was absolutely one of the best runners to grow the sport. My college teammates and I were at the old Adidas grand prix the year where Torrence got his first DL win. We were going nuts on the backstretch and then we got a picture with him after his cooldown. He just stayed in touch with us afterward and a bunch of his got pitchers with him in Eugene after the trials. He was really just a great dude all around. Just feeling stunned reading this.
What shocking news. This really bums me out, I was a huge fan of Dave. He will be greatly missed. Goes to show how fragile life is, and how there are worse things to end running than injury and burnout. I wonder what the cause of death was? Surely he was a strong enough swimmer to not drown in a resort pool?
My first thought...suicide.
What a shame...always seemed like a good guy in interviews
RIP DT
Wtf. Will be awaiting more details.

Things can happen - diving, hitting your head and getting knocked unconscious
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
