Scam can you move this issue over to the Mimi's data thread. The question is about the quality of her data. Mimi has dropped out of her transcon attempt. Sandy is finishing up in the next week.
Hear, hear! Let's not have any interesting discussion - it detracts from the dry posts containing nothing but tables of numbers. :-)
But seriously, the question is about how ascent is measured, and the various elevation data sources and the quality of that data. Totally relevant to a transcon, or to any run really. It's something I've often wondered about myself.

An interesting discussion means the person asking for the discussion has done some homework. Like claiming Kansas is flat and cannot have a great amount of ascent in a run across it. If that person would have actually looked at a route across Kansas they would have seen the great amount of climbing. But that person chose not to actual check anything at all.
So, next time you want to detract from the thread do some homework. :-)

It always amazes me how seemingly "flat" roads can have thousands of feet of imperceptible elevation change over the course of a day of running. That was the case in Iowa (or at least 4 of the 5 days) . . . one morning was legitimately-hilly (basically from Tama/Toledo to Cedar Rapids).

Sandy referred to them as "holy rollers" which she used as part of her title of her day 47 Strava run. The reason the "flat" areas of the US are rolling has to do with the the age of the land. and that much of that land was once ocean bottom which are not flat at all. After that land was drained of ocean water millennia ago the weather and rivers which change course more often than people realize has smoothed out the rough edges but the hilliness remains.
If you are interested in seeing the hilliness of a long run take a look at Mimi's planned route on plotaroute. There is a "Route Profile Tool" which provides elevation with stats (total ascent/descent, downhill/uphill miles and percentage, and long uphill/down hill). Only 5.4% of Mimi's route is flat. The elevation profile has a slider you can use to see the detailed profile for any part of the course; the stats update based on the section you want to see in more detail. For example, Mimi's route from the PA Western border to NYC:
407 miles
Total Ascent/Descent: 19816 feet / 20957 feet
Uphill: 192.43 miles (47.2%)
Downhill: 206.88 miles (50.8%)
Flat: 8.09 miles (2.0%)
Mimi's plotted route in profile view.

Are you autustic? The scamming watch dude was correct and you have continually revealed your ignorance.
Pete, have you even been in Kansas? It is a net elevation loss traveling from west to east, and the cumulative gain data that SW was providing was ridiculous. If you guys want to continue and argue and not face reality, until you admit you are wrong, then keep at it.

Finish based on 5 day avg of 54.2 mi
54.2 miles for 4 day
24.2 on Sun Nov 5th. It is possible for her to finish with 54:X:X if she gets up at midnight and starts running like Pete K. did. Elapsed time doesn't changes from 54:X:X to 55:X:X until 7am PDT / 10am EDT due to daylight savings time change. This makes Math much harder!
Anticipating a 53:X:X finish is no longer necessary because Zwitty has stated on FB they are planning on a Sat finish, which is still very difficult to average 60 miles per day for the next 4 days in blistering cold rain and urban traffic the last day. Forget the skeptics, anything is possible!
