You are billions of people who can make money. You can normally make money from about the age of 15 (in the USA, not counting paper routes, lemonade stands, and allowance), and you can continue earning money until you die. However, you don't hit your peak earning years until your 30's or 40's (typically), but it can last into your 60 (and for some, it never goes down). Plus, some can and do make significant money at a really young age.

There are far fewer runners. And far fewer runners who actually race - as a serious part of their live.

Additionally runners don't hit their peak until about age 22 to24 and it only lasts 5-10 years. There are also severe gender differences. Females can not run a 14:00 5k (maybe one day, but not yet). Although, there is some evidence to suggest a gender wage gap, it is far less than the performance gap. AND there are women who can earn just as much as men - there are female billionaires. There is no upper limit to females wages compared to men.

Really, we are talking about college aged males - who run competitively as part of the population who can run a 14:00 5k. Plus a few who continue to run seriously after college. This is a far smaller population than people who make money.

In short, IMO, 14:00 5k equates to about 250k salary. Maybe 350-500k. It's hard, but it's doable. One of the things making it hard is the time frame when it's possible to first break it (age 19 [really, really hard] to age 24 [if you have not done it by 24, chances are you never will. Not impossible, but like age 19, really hard - not necessarily from a physical aspect, but from a life one]). By the time you are capable, you'll almost out of the idea opportunity (college).

Oh, and if _you_ broke 14:10, then you probably could have run 14:00. It's not that far off. Heck, I'd wager than just about any male who ran 14:40 or better, probably could have run 14:00 or got to shouting distance like you. Not to mention all the people who never ran at all, but had a lot of potential (we all knew kids growing up who could have been great runners, but never tried). Or those who ran the 1500, but never ran a serious 5k (myself for one), and even those who only ran 15 something, but never really got serious (we all know those types too).

Income = how much other people value your work.

If you're a man, your 14:00 5K is worth very little to anyone, so I'd say the equivalent is between $0-$20K, which is where I imagine Jordan Schilit landed at the OTC with his 13:57 PR :) (I assume they thought he had a lot of upside). If you're a woman, a 14:00 5K is probably worth at least six figures, you'd be pretty fast.

Assume 10% participated in high school track, and that if they had flashes of talent they would be pushed into the right distance and running in college. I would say $1.5mm annually is a fair comp to sub 14k, and its probably actually higher. What Greenwich, CT or the UES is to making money, LetsRun is to 5k times.

The original question is not how much you could make as a post-college pro at 14:00/equivalency. So stop with the $20,000 a year BS. You are off on the wrong rabbit trail.

By some SWAG numbers. Some 7.5 million people run 5Ks in the USA. Assume 50-50 ratio, and that maybe on average they do two races a year. For males, that makes about 1.875 million runners. How many individual college and pro athletes do 5Ks under 14 in a year, including track and roads? Maybe 100? 150 max? Either way that's in the

In reality we are kind of like the East Africa on the financial boom.

There is current 1,645 billionaires in the world. There is not 1,645 men currently running under 14:00 for 5k. With this being said if you want to be realistic it is the equivalent of being a low level billionaire. You are making an incredible amount of doe as in you can do basically anything you want financially and it wont hurt you. The $10,000 dollar a spin slot machine at Vegas you can play it and it wont put a dent in your income or even hurt you. You have your limits you wont being going to some giant world level board meeting but you get your share of decision and play in the economic world.

A 13:50-14:00 5k runner is going to be able to run most races world wide a few B level IAAF meets with a giant crowd. Like the above you wont get to play ball with the big boys but you will be able to sneak into a couple of races with a few of the big name stragglers.

A 14 minute 5k is equivalent to shoes and gear (and a few small road race paydays here and there), because that's what the market dictates.

Warren Buffet has said that his capital allocation skills would be practically worthless had he grown up as a poor person in Bangladesh. We throw million dollar salaries as if very smart, hardworking people can achieve them, but they can't in many countries.

In Kenya, it is nearly impossible to earn $1MM in salary, but lots of people can run 14:00. So if it's $1MM in the US, it is $20k in Kenya, somewhere in between for the world as a whole.

There are literally hundreds of sports, and the 5000 is merely one event (and not even the most glamorous one within its event group) in a mostly amateur sport. Most people don't even like to run. Everyone needs and likes money though.

I'd say it's about the equivalent of whatever some boring accountant makes.

Salary represents what society is willing to pay you for a given skill set. In the eyes of a consumer/society track and field is worth paying for to witness the best in the world. Similar reason why AAA baseball players make 30k/year but the MLB players make hundred of thousands to millions/year.

As a 14:00 5k runner you're value is roughly what you can earn running low profile races. If you are a 13:00 5k runner you are a known commodity and are worth paying extra for the chance to watch one of the best in the world. A 13:00 5k runner may draw a few thousand people to a stadium to watch him race. The 14:00 5k runner might draw dozens of people to a local turkey trot.
