Greetings,
33 years old, male. I'm out of shape. I can run 1-2 miles or so without stopping. In college I ran some 15:00-15:30 5000s and 3:55-4:00 1500s, so nothing great, but some reasonable ability. I was constantly injured. I could handle 50-60 mpw but nothing more, and each time I tried to push that mileage I got injured. Never made it more than a season without an injury (achilles, abductors, hips, quads, you name it). I attribute this mostly to pushing it too hard too soon, as I was always trying to get into shape fast.
I signed up for a marathon in mid-May of 2018. First marathon. Given my current out of shape status, and my injury prone status, I'm looking for advice on training for the marathon. I have about 9 months of training, and have no issue with taking it slow. I'm thinking about doing something simple like building up by adding 1 mile to my runs every other week, and only running 4-5x per week, for the first few months. Example:
Weeks 1 and 2: runs of 1-2 miles, 4-5x week
Weeks 3 and 4: runs of 2-3 miles, 4-5x week
Weeks 5 and 6: runs of 3-4 miles, 4-5x week
And then regroup in January to see if I can start adding long runs.
Thoughts??? Thanks!!!!
