Obiri has been so dominant in the 5000m this year that she has almost getting bored. Come the world championships and Almaz Ayana shows up seemingly in better shape than last year. She is what Obiri has been looking for....a worthy competitor. Today both of them qualified easily for the finals. Ayana ran a different kind of race tactic from what we are used to seeing her do. It seems like she was advised to save energy for the finals. And since Ayana ran the second half of that 10000m in 14:26, she should be able to run at least 10 seconds faster than that on Sunday. She knows she cannot outkick Obiri and therefore will adopt her signature tactic of "stretching" the race. Obiri is both mentally and physically prepared this time and we should expect stride for stride all the way to the 300m where Obiri will obliterate both Ayana and the World REcord. What would be Obiri's time? I would think of 14:07.
