Noone in the 800m, flop in the chase and now the ultimate humiliation as Kerley comes LAST and is a total non factor not even mentioned during the commentary.

Dude, he's been trying to maintain his fitness since like early April. What do you expect? The fact he was able to run that well off of fumes is incredible alone.
Its asking a lot of these runners to sustain their peak fitness all through the NCAA season and on into the late summer. He was in the WC final. Its hard to compete at that level when you are fresh. He's been at it since April. He did well.

I bet you say "thon" too, don't you?
It is asking too much for collegiate athletes with a full schedule, over 100 races, to compete against professionals who have had less than 10 meets the entire year.

What college did you go to where you raced 100 times?

Tell that to...
Quincy Watts
Christian Coleman
Jeremy Wariner
Ato Boldon
Andre DeGrasse
Avars Moncur
Danny Everett
Steve Lewis
Kirani James
Trayvon Bromell
....all NCAA athletes who had no problems vs the pros.
He was 7th
Is it DFL when there was a DNS behind him?
I don't see the excuse. It was so blase and awful and non competitive it reminded me of Michael Johnson in 1992 at Barcelona. I attended those Games. Johnson had an excuse.
I seem to remember Calculo saying something about Kerley only being able to go so many times under 44 in one year - or it may have been something about how any human being can only run so many fast 400's in a year. Just too hard on the body. I think he even predicted Kerley would burn out by Worldd? Hate to say it but sounds like he was right for once.

You beat me to it and that is the short list.
Nathon Allen another NCAAer ran a new PR here.

something along those lines
( & i'm right a lot )
a human has only certain number of elite runs in a season, especially one who was essentially a non-professional
this was borne out by Gatlin in '15 when running truck-loads of 9.7/9.8s & burnt out by peking where he ran out of gas in last 20m
Fred had run a 43.70 & 44-flat & 1 run at least similar calibre to latter in terms of relay in NCAA season
the writing was on the wall when he won NCAA in quite a slow time for him of 44.10 when 43-mid was expected as expected peak run of season, albeit weather not too good
then came trials where he looked a bit flat in winning in 44-flat
in his 43.70 he looked capable of 43.50 as that was a prelim, so by time of trials he looked to have lost 1/2s
i thought perhaps he coud recover a little by london but ran coupla disappointing 200s on euro circuit
i expected 19.8/19.9 if at peak & pushed it hard, but ran some mediocre 20.2/20.3 or somesuch rubbish which tallies with slowing of 400 by 1/2s
perhaps he was in intense training & ran those 200s with no training break ?
that was the straw to cling onto
however, there was no straw, it simply was that he was absolutely finished by end of trials & gone backwards by even another 1/2s for 400m in london
people bring up quincey in '92 as example of what Fred coudn't do
however, quincey never ran faster than 44.0 in ncaa season in final & his next best was 44.43
Fred ran quantum leap faster/more often in NCAA season than quincey ever did & quincey far fresher for games than Fred was here
if quincey had put in same level of effort & as often in '92 as Fred did this year in ncaa seasn, i doubt quincey wouda even medalled in '92
Fred in retrospect really had no reason to crush NCAA records except for hubris, but he can't be blamed for this
Last time I checked Kerley set his PR at the end of May, Nobody should expect him to even compete, let alone make the final two months later.
Great year for him. I am sure he is top 3 next year.
blah blah blah peaked at NCAA's, shouldn't be expected to race in August, blah blah blah.
Who forced him to go to nationals, qualify, and then go to London? If he wasn't going to be fit enough, he could have - and should have - given up his spot. No excuse.
You really do need to do your homework on NCAA athlete in Olympic and World Champs competition. You appear to be clueless.

+1
Wasn't really washed up, more so he ran an overly intense semi and paid for it. Had he run a better semi he would surely been in the hunt for Bronze and Potentially silver.
Going out at 20.5 and dying to a 24.0 isn't the best way to prep for a championship final that is only two days away.
I'm sure he was capable of 44.3/44.2 if he had run a reasonable semi.

Strava thinks the London Marathon times improved 12 minutes last year thanks to supershoes
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Clayton Murphy is giving some great insight into his training.
