Big Lance also bounced back from cancer by doping. Not saying that as an excuse, just like I don't let "ADHD" fly as an excuse, especially if you're in college and you have an NCAA compliance control officer at your school. It's not like he's taking some obscure drug made from ground-up sivlerback gorilla hairs mixed with unicorn piss, it's Ritalin. Any cheat-sheet (no pun intended) of banned substances is bound to have that one towards the top because it's so common. If you're competing at a level where they have drug testing, know what drugs will be tested: HS, college or pro. Even Evan Jager's "I used an inhaler because I had allergies and I got a doctor's note before the OTs...but I only did it 5 times so it's no big deal..." -- wait, what? C'mon man. If you knew it was "sketchy" why would you ever put yourself in that situation? All these guys are all probably doping, but you're smoking crack if you think OLD MAN GATLIN is now a legitimate champ over the current field of 20-something-year-old 100m sprinters. "Oh, but he's racing more, and he's doing it for his friends and not himself." GTFO.
There's great athletes out there that I'd rather see run with USA on their chest than a 35-year-old convicted doper. I would/could forgive him, but why? I'm not in the business of being soft on doping. It's basically the most egregious offense in track. I'd rather watch someone punch somebody out (like at that meet a few years ago), because there's more honor in that than sitting in a dark lab on the Nike campus creating new cocktails so advanced, WADA doesn't even know they exist.
There's lots of other great talent, and even if it weren't US, I'd rather take some Norwegian over Justin Mother-dopin' Gatlin. Coleman's presumably done it clean, and is one of the rising stars in the 100m. The board quarterbacks and statisticians are quick to denounce literally anyone running fast...except the guy that was actually a doper. Then it's a pity-Disney-movie-comeback-of-the-ages-inspriational-story-from-the-guys-who-brought-you-cinderella-man. Gotta love that #MAGA! And Jenny Simpson. I don't think she could do any wrong, at least with this crowd.
And I'll leave this here: I don't think track will ever get out from under doping. Cycling came down HARD after the whole Lance debacle and still struggles. Meanwhile, IAAF let Russia back into the Olympics, Gatlin is making a doping comeback, AlSal and his crew are miles ahead of WADA testing and almost every fast time is met with skepticism. Coe and cronies have no control over the sport and talk in regrets. When Gatlin won, I was expecting the Brojos to eviscerate him, but unfortunately I found celebration of a convicted doper. "But he's clean now!" -- That should never, ever have to be a defense of a US athlete. To quote the Donald: "sad."
