Unusually late (some would say crazy) start times for the World Championship marathons, 10:55am for the men and 2:00pm for the women, 69°f/21°c forecast so with direct sun could be hot and favor the Africans. What do you think?

Why would that favor the Africans? I wouldn't say African runners train in the heat any more than anyone else does. The average high in Eldoret is like 70 degrees F.
I agree that the start times are crazy though. A marathon at 2pm is going to be miserable. Not sure why they couldn't have started the men and women close together like any major marathon and started earlier.
Big pack, they have four 10km laps to run. Good for spectators.
Frequent turns. Predictions ? After 3km, everyone is there. Around 100 runners. Did not catch the split at 3km, but it was fairly steady.
French TV back and forth to stadium. Frustrating.
What an idiotic OP.
East African runners generally don't live in hot conditions and certainly don't train in them.
If anything, hot weather favors fluke medals from slower European and N/S American athletes.
Do you even follow track? Think Baldini. Meb. De Lima. Rupp.

so that the women dont get lost/forgotten in the mens race as often happens at the majors.
do agree that the start time is ridiculous though. different days would have been better.
Meucci leading at 5km, around 16 mins. Around 2.15 pace, but things will change. Mekonnen bolts away. He has a 2.07 best time. All the Ethiopians right there.

French Channel, TV2, free.
Annoying, back and forth to stadium. Even Eurosport France, going back and forth.

1) not all are from the Rift Valley. Gebrselassie who won Beijing was from a hot area of Eritrea.
2) most EA marathoners are small and/or skinny, giving them a lower ratio of volume to surface area which makes cooling more efficient.
consider two cubes with sides of 1 and 2 meters.
cube 1: volume 1m^3, surface area 6m*3
cube 2: volume 8m*3, surface area 24m*3
yeah, I know, 6m^2, 24m^2
Hawkins, GB, leading solid pace at 44 mins. Kibet, USA-Kenya, right there.30 strong lead group
They are on 2.10 pace now. Race still very open, as they approach half marathon in around 15 mins from now.

Another DUMB IGNORANT AMERICAN. All Africans train before sunrise fool. Google AddisAbaba, Eldoret, and Nairobi weather. Wake up!
